Mango Season Arrives
The much-anticipated mango season has officially graced Bengaluru, drawing significant crowds to the city's yearly mango and jackfruit fair. This vibrant
event provides an opportunity for residents to procure exceptionally fresh, naturally ripened fruits directly from the agricultural producers at prices that are highly competitive. This year, the enthusiasm is amplified by the prospect of reduced prices for several premium mango varieties within the domestic market, largely due to potential disruptions in the usual export channels. Enthusiasts of this beloved fruit are making their way to Cubbon Park, the designated venue for the Bengaluru Mango and Jackfruit Mela 2026, located conveniently near the Band Stand and Bal Bhavan gate. The ten-day festival commenced on May 8 and is scheduled to conclude on May 17, operating daily between 6 am and 7 pm. The mela features close to 50 stalls, thoughtfully arranged to offer a broad spectrum of mangoes, all guaranteed to be free from chemical treatments. These fruits are sourced directly from dedicated growers hailing from Karnataka and its surrounding regions, as reported by The Times of India.
Variety Galore Awaits
Visitors to the mela are presented with an exceptional selection of highly coveted mango varieties, ensuring there's something to delight every palate. Among the stars are the Badami, often referred to as Karnataka's own Alphonso, cherished for its rich flavour. Alongside it, you'll find the popular Raspuri, the subtly sweet Mallika, and the vibrantly coloured Sendhura. Enthusiasts can also savour the delicate taste of Imam Pasand and the aromatic Kesar, alongside the renowned Ratnagiri Alphonso. Beyond the diverse mango offerings, a few vendors are also showcasing different types of jackfruit, including the distinctive Rudrakshi and Tubagere varieties. This extensive range transforms the mela into a true celebration of seasonal fruits, making it a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the best of what the harvest season has to offer. The sheer variety ensures a culinary adventure for all who attend.
Delectable Fruit Creations
Beyond the fresh fruit itself, the mela has blossomed into a significant attraction for its extensive array of delightful mango and jackfruit-based culinary creations. Food stalls are bustling with activity, offering an enticing menu that goes far beyond simple fruit consumption. Attendees can cool down with refreshing mango ice cream and jackfruit ice cream, or quench their thirst with freshly squeezed mango juice. For those seeking unique flavours, jackfruit papad offers a novel snacking experience, while mango bhel provides a zesty twist on a classic chaat. The menu also extends to invigorating jamun shots and amla shots, providing a healthy and tangy boost. Complementing these seasonal fruit specials is a selection of traditional snacks, all expertly prepared using the freshest seasonal fruits, ensuring a complete gastronomic experience that celebrates the versatility of mangoes and jackfruit.
Market Dynamics Unfolded
Industry observers and exporters are predicting a rather unusual mango market for Bengaluru this year, primarily due to significant disruptions impacting India's export activities to countries in West Asia. Current estimates from within the industry suggest that the volume of mangoes being shipped overseas has experienced a notable decline, reportedly falling by approximately 20-30% this particular season. Compounding this situation, freight charges have also seen a sharp escalation, making international shipments considerably more expensive and complex. Exporters are highlighting that this challenging environment has intensified the difficulties associated with dispatching premium-quality mangoes abroad. Consequently, it is anticipated that a greater proportion of fruit that would typically be destined for export markets may now become available within domestic markets. This shift in supply could potentially lead to increased availability and more moderate pricing for consumers across the country.
Pricing Insights Revealed
While the overall market dynamics suggest potential price moderation, traders are issuing a cautionary note, particularly concerning premium organically grown and naturally ripened mangoes. They emphasize that these high-quality varieties may not necessarily witness a significant reduction in their prices. This is attributed to the inherently higher cultivation and handling costs associated with producing such superior fruits. Across the mela and other Bengaluru markets, different mango varieties are presently being offered at a spectrum of price points, dictated by factors such as quality, specific variety, and prevailing demand. For instance, Badami, Karnataka's highly regarded Alphonso variant, is currently priced between approximately Rs 100 and Rs 150 per kilogram for produce designated as export-quality. Imam Pasand mangoes are commanding prices in the range of Rs 300 to Rs 350 per kilogram. The esteemed Ratnagiri Alphonso varieties are available from Rs 150 to Rs 350 per kilogram, with variations based on grade and overall quality. Sindhura mangoes present a more accessible option, retailing between Rs 60 and Rs 80 per kilogram. Kesar and Raspuri varieties are generally priced around Rs 100 to Rs 150 per kilogram.
The Exotic Miyazaki
Standing out as one of the most exclusive and sought-after offerings this season is the Indian iteration of the premium Japanese Miyazaki mango. This exotic variety has captured the attention of discerning fruit aficionados and is commanding premium prices that reflect its rarity and esteemed status. Currently, the price range for these opulent mangoes is between Rs 2,000 and Rs 2,500 per kilogram. This considerable price tag positions the Miyazaki mango at the pinnacle of the market, making it a luxury item for those seeking an unparalleled mango experience. The presence of such high-value fruits alongside more affordable options at the mela underscores the vast diversity available to consumers, catering to a wide range of budgets and preferences.
Anticipating Increased Footfall
With the ongoing school holidays providing a perfect opportunity for families to visit, and the mango season now firmly entering its peak phase, organizers are expressing optimism about a further surge in footfall at the mela in the coming days. The fair has firmly established itself as a significant annual draw in Bengaluru, attracting a diverse crowd that includes families seeking wholesome outings, dedicated fruit lovers eager to sample the season's best, curious tourists wanting to experience local culture, and enthusiastic foodies on the hunt for unique culinary delights. The unique combination of an extensive variety of locally grown mangoes, coupled with an enticing selection of seasonal delicacies, all available in one convenient location, continues to be the primary draw. This concentrated offering makes the mela a central hub for experiencing the essence of the mango season in Bengaluru.
