An Earthly Sanctuary
Nestled in the wild beauty of Melides, Portugal, Rockrose emerges as an architectural marvel, conceived by the esteemed Aires Mateus for visual artist
Marta Alvim and her partner, pilot Vasco Maya. This extraordinary 500-square-meter residence is born from a vision of compacted earth, reminiscent of ancient adobe techniques, creating walls of remarkable solidity and an aura of profound stillness. The owners, captivated by the ten hectares of untamed landscape, entrusted the architect with translating their dream into a tangible form. Aires Mateus, drawing upon his experience in restoration, embraced this unique material, culminating in a home where horizontality, precise symmetry, and an unbroken connection with the surrounding nature coalesce into something truly mystical. The six-year construction process was a testament to dedication, involving meticulous hand-molding of the earth with invaluable assistance from Tânia Teixeira of Atelier Cru, resulting in a structure that feels deeply rooted in its environment.
Spaces of Contemplation
The interior of Rockrose unfolds with a deliberate sense of monastic austerity, featuring five suites that offer unobstructed views of the perpetual landscape where the dense forest converges with the boundless blue of the sea. Beyond these private retreats, the home is thoughtfully designed for reflection and rejuvenation. A 'fire room,' envisioned as an intimate cave, serves as a dedicated space for meditation, complete with a fireplace. Adjacent is a 'water room' graced by a Roman basin, inviting tranquil moments. Marta Alvim, with her discerning eye for intellectual pursuits, curated a personal library filled with volumes on experimental cinema, art, essays, and philosophy, providing a rich resource for contemplation. For outdoor enjoyment, a saltwater pool, lined with lioz stone and heated during cooler months, ensures the property remains a welcoming haven year-round, catering to guests who appreciate extended stays.
Craftsmanship and Nature
Every element within Rockrose speaks of a deep appreciation for craftsmanship and natural materials. Terracotta tiles, individually shaped in Santa Catarina, Algarve, adorn key areas, adding an artisanal touch. The living stucco walls actively contribute to the home's comfort by naturally regulating humidity and temperature, creating a consistently pleasant internal climate. This mindful approach extends to the selection of austere yet precisely chosen furniture, complementing the architecture's minimalist ethos. The landscaping, developed in collaboration with Sigmentum studio, exclusively features native flora, further integrating the residence with its environment. The stunning vistas over the valley, culminating in the expansive blue of the Atlantic, serve as a constant reminder of the property's breathtaking location. Details like linen and organic cotton bed linens, refined brass fittings from Casa Achilles, hand-painted crockery by Vida Dura, and tiles by ceramist Víctor Marqué all underscore a commitment to traditional techniques and artisanal quality.
A Haven for Well-being
Rockrose is more than just a stunning residence; it is the physical embodiment of Marta Alvim's research into neuroaesthetics—the study of how beauty and sensory experiences influence the brain and contribute to longevity and mental health. This home serves as her personal sanctuary, a place where architecture, light, proportion, silence, and textures are orchestrated to foster profound well-being. The property is available for full rental, accommodating up to twelve guests, and welcomes families with children. Accessibility within the house is universal, though guests should be mindful of the natural terrain and the remote location. Four-legged companions are also welcomed, with each pet's stay being considered on an individual basis. The house operates year-round, offering a comprehensive experience that can include services such as a private chef, an astrologer, and Ayurvedic treatments, all contributing to the pursuit of a truly beautiful life.
