Viral Video Sparks Outrage
A passenger aboard the Patna–Tatanagar Vande Bharat Express captured and shared a disturbing video that quickly went viral across social media platforms.
The footage depicted live worms present in the food served during the journey, leading to widespread public outcry. Initially, when the passenger brought the issue to the attention of the train attendant, the staff member dismissed the concern, suggesting the specks were merely saffron. This initial denial further fueled the passenger's frustration and highlighted a lack of immediate concern from the service provider. The passenger's persistence in showcasing the contaminated meal, including a pre-packaged cup of curd that was found to be expired and infested, brought the gravity of the situation to light. This incident underscored significant lapses in food handling and quality control within the train's catering services.
Swift Ministry Intervention
The Ministry of Railways, upon witnessing the widespread circulation of the video and the accompanying public discontent, swiftly launched an investigation into the food quality incident. The ministry confirmed that the unfortunate event took place on March 15th aboard train number 21896, the Patna–Tatanagar Vande Bharat Express. Recognizing the severity of the lapse, the Ministry of Railways took decisive action, imposing substantial financial penalties. The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) was fined Rs 10 lakh for its oversight. More critically, the catering service provider faced a much larger penalty of Rs 50 lakh. In addition to the monetary penalty, the ministry issued a direct order to terminate the contract with this service provider, sending a clear message about the non-negotiable importance of passenger safety and the integrity of food served on its trains.
Prioritizing Passenger Safety
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the paramount importance of maintaining stringent standards for food safety and hygiene, especially in public transportation. The Ministry of Railways reiterated its unwavering commitment to ensuring that passenger safety and the quality of food provided remain its foremost priorities. The substantial penalties and the immediate termination of the contract with the errant vendor are intended to deter future occurrences and reinforce the seriousness with which such complaints are treated. The railway administration aims to assure passengers that their well-being is at the core of all operational decisions, and that robust mechanisms are in place to address and rectify any shortcomings, thereby safeguarding the reputation and trust placed in its services by millions of travelers across the nation.
