Siliguri's Strategic Importance
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently emphasized the critical strategic value of the Siliguri region in West Bengal, a vital gateway for India's national
security. During a rally in Siliguri, he articulated that the Siliguri Corridor, colloquially known as the 'Chicken's Neck,' is not merely a geographical feature but the very 'arm of Mother India.' This narrow passage, approximately 20–22 kilometers wide at its most constricted point, is strategically situated near the international borders of Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, and China, underscoring its immense significance for regional defense and connectivity to India's Northeast.
Accusations Against TMC
PM Modi leveled serious accusations against the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal, alleging that the party has "rewarded" what he termed the "Tukde-tukde gang." He claimed this group poses a threat to India's territorial integrity by advocating for the separation of the Northeast from the mainland. According to the Prime Minister, the TMC has supported such elements, extending from street-level activism to parliamentary advocacy, demonstrating what he described as an "ill-advised policy" detrimental to the nation's security. The term "Tukde-tukde gang," previously used by the BJP to target left-leaning students, has evolved into a broader pejorative label employed by some leaders against various opposition factions.
Hindrances to Development
Beyond security concerns, Prime Minister Modi also accused the Trinamool Congress government in West Bengal of actively obstructing the implementation of various Central government welfare schemes. He asserted that illegal infiltrators, who he claimed are being patronized by the state's ruling party, are creating significant impediments to the overall development of West Bengal. This, he explained, leads to local residents losing employment opportunities. Modi urged the electorate to bring the 'lotus' (BJP symbol) to power, enabling the removal of these infiltrators and paving the way for improved conditions.
Call for Change
In his address, Prime Minister Modi urged the people of West Bengal to break free from prolonged periods of rule by the Left Front and the Trinamool Congress. He implored them to give his party, the BJP, a chance to govern, promising to focus on critical areas such as protecting women, generating employment, establishing the rule of law, ensuring free medical treatment for the poor, and safeguarding Bengali culture from what he described as appeasement politics. He concluded by suggesting that a vote for his party would usher in positive changes for the state.
