Widespread Heatwave Warnings
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has activated widespread heatwave warnings, signaling extreme weather conditions for a significant portion of
the country. Much of Northwest, Central, and South-Central India are under active heatwave to severe heat wave advisories. In these affected zones, daily maximum temperatures are frequently hovering between 40°C and 45°C, with a few isolated weather stations recording temperatures as high as 46°C. Areas like West Rajasthan and severe zones within North India, where temperatures are already exceeding 46°C, are currently under a 'Red Alert,' signifying extreme severity. Simultaneously, an 'Orange Alert' is in effect for states including Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, and Telangana, valid until May 20th, with maximum temperatures potentially reaching up to 45°C. As of May 17th, heatwave conditions were already noted in pockets of Vidarbha and isolated areas of West Madhya Pradesh, with most of Central India and adjoining North Peninsular India experiencing temperatures between 40°C and 45°C.
Projected Temperature Trends
Looking ahead, the IMD anticipates a continued increase in daytime temperatures across various regions. A gradual rise of 2–3°C in maximum temperatures is expected in many parts of Northwest India from May 18th to May 24th. Chhattisgarh is projected to see a more significant increase of 3–4°C by May 21st. However, Maharashtra and Gujarat are likely to experience no substantial change in maximum temperatures until May 18th, followed by a slight decrease of 2–3°C between May 19th and May 24th. For the rest of the country, no major shifts in maximum temperatures are predicted until May 24th. Specifically, the northwestern region, encompassing Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi, is forecast to face hot and humid conditions in isolated pockets between May 18th and May 24th.
Regional Heatwave Details
Specific regional forecasts highlight varying intensities and durations of heatwave conditions. West Rajasthan might encounter heatwave conditions intermittently from May 18th to May 24th, potentially accompanied by warm nights during the first few days of this period (May 18th to May 21st). East Rajasthan also faces similar heatwave conditions in isolated pockets from May 18th to May 24th, with warm nights expected from May 18th to May 20th. For Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh, the IMD has issued a forecast for heatwave-like conditions to appear in isolated pockets on May 18th and 19th. Western Uttar Pradesh is bracing for heatwave conditions in a few pockets on May 18th, escalating to heatwave or severe heatwave conditions from May 19th to May 24th. Eastern Uttar Pradesh will experience heatwave conditions on May 18th, followed by a similar escalation to heatwave or severe heatwave conditions from May 19th to May 24th.
Health Risks & Precautions
The IMD has issued a critical advisory regarding the health implications of these extreme temperatures. While the general population can generally tolerate the heat, certain groups are at a significantly higher risk. Infants, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing chronic illnesses are particularly vulnerable and face moderate to high health risks, including the potential for dehydration and heatstroke. To mitigate these dangers, the public is strongly advised to limit outdoor activities, especially between the peak hours of 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM, when the sun's intensity and ambient temperatures are at their highest. Taking proactive measures to stay cool and hydrated is paramount during this period of intense heat.
