A Rich Historical Tapestry
The history of Stout's Island is as captivating as its present-day charm. Originally acquired in the late 1800s by lumber baron Frank D. Stout and his partner Thomas Wilson, Jr., Stout became the sole owner in 1903. It was in that same year that the initial main lodge was constructed, drawing inspiration from Adirondack camps and utilizing imported timber from Germany's Black Forest. The current lodge, built in 1912, features robust cedar logs from Idaho and redwood timbers from California, incorporating essential modern amenities like plumbing and electricity. Adding to its historical significance, the bridge connecting the main island to East Island was a generous contribution from Andrew Carnegie, underscoring the island's enduring legacy and architectural heritage.
