Measles Cases Surface
Over the past few months, Chennai has observed instances of measles cases. While public health officials are not reporting a significant surge or localized
clusters of infections, paediatricians are noting a common thread among the affected children: they were not fully immunized against measles. This situation underscores a potential vulnerability in the community's protection against this preventable disease, even as overall vaccination coverage remains high in the state.
Vaccination Efficacy Explained
According to A. Somasundaram, Director of Public Health, the state boasts an impressive immunisation coverage rate of 99%. The Measles-Rubella (MR) vaccine, a cornerstone of childhood protection, is administered in two doses: at nine months and again at 18 months. This vaccine demonstrates approximately 85% efficacy, meaning it provides robust protection against measles and rubella for the vast majority of children who receive both shots. This high level of efficacy is crucial in maintaining herd immunity and preventing widespread outbreaks within the population.
