New Sleeper Route Approved
Indian Railways has officially sanctioned the establishment of a second Vande Bharat Sleeper corridor, a significant development following the successful
introduction of the first service on the Assam-Bengal route. This new premium overnight train will connect Bengaluru and Mumbai, two pivotal economic hubs in the country. The decision underscores the growing demand for enhanced long-distance rail travel options, particularly for journeys that span overnight. This initiative is a key part of the nation's broader strategy to modernize its extensive railway network, aiming to make inter-city travel more efficient, comfortable, and technologically advanced. The Union Railway Minister confirmed this much-anticipated development, highlighting the commitment to upgrade the passenger experience.
Bengaluru-Mumbai Connectivity
The forthcoming Vande Bharat Sleeper train will operate daily between KSR Bengaluru City Junction and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai. This route, covering approximately 1153 kilometers, is designed to significantly reduce travel time compared to existing options. Current services like the Udyan Express can take over 23 hours, while other faster trains still require close to 19 hours. The new Vande Bharat Sleeper is projected to complete this journey in a considerably shorter timeframe of around 12 to 13 hours, offering a competitive alternative to air travel for overnight passengers. The deployment of two dedicated rakes, one from each city, will ensure a daily service in both directions, enhancing connectivity between these two major metropolitan areas.
Transforming Overnight Journeys
The introduction of the Vande Bharat Sleeper service is a strategic move by Indian Railways to redefine overnight rail travel. The vision is to offer a superior journey experience through modern amenities, improved comfort, and enhanced safety features. Passengers can anticipate updated berth designs, contemporary interiors, and a smoother ride, all contributing to a more restful sleep during their travel. This focus on advanced technology and passenger comfort is intended to make the Vande Bharat Sleeper a preferred choice for inter-city travel, challenging the convenience of short-haul flights. This upgrade aligns with the ambitious goal of inducting 12 such sleeper trains across various routes by the end of 2026, further bolstering the nation's rail infrastructure.
Success of First Sleeper
The positive reception of India's inaugural Vande Bharat Sleeper service between Kamakhya and Howrah serves as a strong precedent for the Bengaluru-Mumbai route. Launched with great enthusiasm, the first service reported exceptional occupancy rates, exceeding 100% in its initial three months and accommodating over 1.2 lakh passengers. This remarkable performance is attributed to the modern facilities and enhanced travel experience it offers. The broader Vande Bharat network, initiated in 2019, has already served more than 9 crore passengers, demonstrating the significant impact of these semi-high-speed trains on Indian rail travel. The success of the initial sleeper service fuels optimism for the new Bengaluru-Mumbai corridor.
