Growing Popularity, Troubling Encounters
Vietnam has rapidly become a favored destination for Indian travelers, drawn by its scenic beauty and affordability. However, a growing number of visitors
have reported experiencing disconcerting and sometimes overtly hostile receptions from locals, particularly in commercial settings. Despite a significant increase in Indian tourist numbers – with over 158,000 visitors in the first two months of 2026 and a 297% rise in 2024 compared to pre-pandemic levels – their on-the-ground experiences have not always mirrored the strengthening tourism ties. Popular hubs like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, and Phu Quoc, often chosen for honeymoons and destination weddings, have unfortunately become the backdrop for these unwelcome encounters, leaving many tourists questioning the warmth they expected.
Personal Accounts of Discrimination
Several Indian tourists have recounted deeply unsettling experiences in Vietnamese markets and shops. One professional from Noida shared how a shopkeeper explicitly refused service upon learning she was Indian, curtly stating, "I don’t have shoes for you. Go." Another traveler from Delhi faced a similar situation where a shopkeeper, using a translation app, declared, "You Indians come here, bargain and waste our time. Get lost." In a more confrontational incident, three Indian women were initially ignored in a shop, and upon deciding to leave due to quality concerns, were subjected to a barrage of insults and expletives from the shopkeeper. A journalist visiting with her family also noted being snapped at in a vegetable shop and refused service when inquiring about a dress price, suggesting nationality was the basis for the differential treatment, as other patrons were not treated similarly. Beyond verbal abuse, some tourists reported attempts to snatch money or unwarranted rummaging through wallets, creating feelings of unease and discomfort.
Stereotypes Fueling Hostility
While such negative interactions are never justifiable, many Indian tourists suggest that pre-existing stereotypes about Indian travelers may be a significant contributing factor to the friction. These stereotypes reportedly include aggressive bargaining tactics and, at times, perceived inappropriate behavior. One traveler noted that the actions of some individuals have unfortunately cast a generalized negative image on all Indian visitors, impacting their reception. Social media discussions and personal anecdotes mention instances of intense bargaining that lead to vendors refusing sales, arguments during boarding, and littering, creating a perception of "difficult Indian tourists." Some observers have noted that Indian groups can sometimes be perceived as being noisier or causing more disruption in public spaces, leading to embarrassment for other Indian visitors and potentially contributing to the unwelcoming attitudes encountered.
Vendor Perspectives and Nuances
From the perspective of some local shopkeepers, the intensity of bargaining by Indian tourists can indeed be a source of frustration, sometimes leading to prolonged negotiations that hinder their ability to serve other customers. One vendor recounted an instance where a price was quoted at 270,000 Vietnamese dong, but an Indian tourist insisted on 110,000 dong and continued negotiating until the vendor, out of exhaustion, sold it for 145,000 dong. This persistent negotiation, even after prices were firm, is cited as a reason why some sellers might preemptively avoid engaging with Indian customers. However, this sentiment is not universal. Many vendors express gratitude for Indian tourists, with some even learning Hindi phrases to better welcome them. A tour guide acknowledged that such negative incidents are unacceptable and should be reported, emphasizing that these instances are likely isolated and do not represent the overall hospitality of Vietnam, which is widely known and appreciated by visitors.
Vietnam's Enduring Charm
Despite these reported interpersonal challenges, Vietnam's allure as a travel destination remains potent. The country continues to captivate with its stunning natural landscapes, such as the dramatic limestone karsts of Ha Long Bay, and its vibrant cultural tapestry, exemplified by the lantern-lit streets of Hoi An and the energetic markets of Hanoi. The unique coffee culture, offering distinctive brews like egg coffee and coconut coffee, adds another rich layer to the visitor experience. For Indian travelers, the combination of increasing flight connectivity, affordability, and a natural curiosity about diverse cultures makes Vietnam a highly appealing choice. Moving forward, a greater mutual understanding, with Indian visitors being mindful of local customs and locals extending the renowned Vietnamese hospitality, can help foster more positive and enriching travel experiences for all.
