A Dream Ignited
Kesav Suneesh, a 21-year-old B.Com student hailing from Alappuzha, Kerala, embarked on a remarkable journey that culminated at the iconic Everest Base
Camp. His aspiration to reach this formidable altitude wasn't born from a desire for fleeting glory, but from a deep-seated ambition that recognized the immense challenges involved. Understanding that a full Everest expedition, with its staggering ₹50 lakh price tag, was financially out of reach, Kesav strategically reframed his goal. He focused on achieving the more accessible milestone of Everest Base Camp, situated at 5,364 meters. This approach demonstrates a profound ability to break down monumental aspirations into manageable steps. His triumph is especially noteworthy given his background; he meticulously saved funds from humble occupations, including working at a vegetable shop and as a food delivery agent. The roughly ₹35,000 earned from these endeavors, combined with additional delivery earnings, formed the financial bedrock for his Himalayan adventure. This journey underscores a powerful narrative: one where privilege was not a prerequisite, but rather unwavering persistence was the true currency. His achievement stands as a testament to the idea that substantial dreams can be nurtured and realized through sheer hard work and strategic planning, even in the face of financial constraints.
The Arduous Path
Kesav’s expedition was far from a conventional tourist experience; it was a test of resilience and resourcefulness. To meticulously manage his limited budget of ₹16,000, he opted for the most economical travel methods available. This involved journeying by second-class train compartments and local buses, a stark contrast to the comfort often associated with such expeditions. His entry into Nepal was made via the Sonauli border, after which he continued his journey towards Salleri, the starting point for his trek. From Salleri, the true challenge began as he covered over 132 kilometers on foot over eight demanding days. Along this arduous route, he navigated through numerous settlements and landmarks, including Paiya, Tengboche, Dingboche, and Lobuche, before finally reaching Gorakshep, the village situated closest to Everest Base Camp. To further minimize expenses, Kesav carried his own camping gear, slept in makeshift accommodations, and prepared his own meals. This self-sufficiency was crucial in adhering to his strict budget. The journey was a stark reminder of the raw realities of adventure, where weather, fatigue, and the sheer unforgiving nature of the terrain test one’s resolve at every turn. His initial attempt in September 2025 was disrupted by personal tragedy, with the passing of his grandmother in January necessitating a return home. However, this setback did not deter him; instead, it fueled a renewed determination. After returning to work to replenish his savings, he recommenced his trek on April 7, demonstrating an exceptional level of commitment and a quiet resolve that made his eventual success feel profoundly earned.
Discipline's Foundation
Kesav attributes his remarkable endurance and mental fortitude to experiences cultivated long before his trek to Everest Base Camp. His involvement in Scouts and Guides during his schooling at NRPM HSS in Kayamkulam, followed by his participation in the National Cadet Corps (NCC) during college, played a pivotal role in shaping his physical and mental resilience. These formative experiences, while not making the physical demands of the mountains any less challenging, instilled in him a crucial steadiness and determination. This inner strength allowed him to persevere when the trails became steep, the air grew thin, and the physical toll mounted. His journey also illuminates a distinct type of ambition that thrives amidst adversity. This ambition is characterized by its practicality, patience, and deep integration into a disciplined routine, rather than being ostentatious or flashy. Kesav did not await ideal circumstances or external support; instead, he actively created his own path. He worked diligently to save funds, traveled with extreme frugality, and maintained a persistent forward momentum. This methodical and grounded approach allowed him to navigate the complexities of his dream without succumbing to the easier temptation of abandonment. The skills and mindset honed through his earlier disciplined activities provided an essential framework for overcoming the significant obstacles he faced on his arduous ascent.
Base Camp: A Beginning
Standing at the majestic Everest Base Camp, Kesav Suneesh experienced the profound realization of a long-held dream, yet he views this accomplishment not as an endpoint, but as a significant stepping stone. He is acutely aware that reaching the actual summit presents a distinct and far greater challenge, necessitating advanced technical equipment, expert guidance, and extensive preparation over several weeks. However, his reflections are not confined to past tense; they carry the forward-looking perspective of someone committed to achieving the ultimate goal. His immediate plans involve completing his academic studies and securing a stable job, which will enable him to systematically save the substantial funds required for the summit attempt. For the moment, the mountain has bestowed upon him a more invaluable gift: irrefutable proof that taking that crucial first step, regardless of how distant the final destination may seem, holds immense significance. At the young age of 21, Kesav has already accomplished what many can only imagine. He has powerfully demonstrated that dreams can originate and flourish within the constraints of ordinary life and work, yet still ascend to extraordinary heights, reshaping perceptions of what is possible through sheer will and calculated effort.
