Portable Luxury Unveiled
During Milan's annual design extravaganza, a celebrated French fashion house presented its latest collection of portable, travel-inspired furniture. Housed
within the opulent surroundings of Palazzo Serbelloni, this exhibition highlighted an evolving approach to interior design. One notable piece was a 'bibliothèque' reimagined from the brand's iconic luggage, unfurling to reveal curated books and decorative items. Another display featured a trunk ingeniously transformed into a folding screen, complete with full-length mirrors functioning as a closet. The collection also introduced a singular iteration of a well-known seating piece, the 'Cocoon' chair, now adorned with flowing fringe, a detail evoking a designer's recent fashion creation for the brand's womenswear line.
Tribute to a Pioneer
A prominent hospitality group made its debut at Milan Design Week by dedicating its exhibition to the memory of a pioneering Italian designer and a key figure in the Radical Design movement. This retrospective, curated by a former director of a renowned London design museum, explored the designer's distinctive creations. The display featured striking, tall lamps characterized by their intricate patterns, constructed from Japanese rice paper and solid Belgian bluestone. These illuminated works were positioned within a distinctively green-hued setting. Complementing these pieces were various artworks, carefully selected from the collections of the hospitality group's global properties, including a bronze sculpture by a Spanish designer and a luxurious marble pet carrier created by a Dutch artist.
Architectural Innovation
For the second consecutive year, an automotive manufacturer chose the elegant courtyard of a historic hotel as the venue for its Milan Design Week showcase. This year, the brand commissioned a renowned architectural studio to conceive a pavilion that would visually interpret the company's progressive identity. The resulting structure, a matte titanium form named 'Origin,' was positioned above a tranquil oval pool. This design invited visitors to walk through a looping form, offering a moment of sensory immersion. The pavilion's fluid, organically inspired curves and asymmetrical design presented a stark, modern counterpoint to the hotel's classical Renaissance architecture and its formal, geometric patterns.
Chic Social Gathering
On a pleasant evening, a well-known hospitality designer hosted an exclusive reception for industry peers within the lush garden setting of a luxury Milanese hotel. Guests mingled amidst meticulously shaped topiaries and vibrantly patterned outdoor furnishings, sharing their experiences from the week's design events. Conversations also touched upon anticipated post-event getaways to picturesque Italian locales. Refreshments were served from a mobile bar, featuring classic aperitif drinks, which set a distinctly Milanese mood. This convivial gathering preceded further evening engagements, including dinners and parties across the city.
