Aerial Access Initiative
Inspired by the successful aerial services at Prayagraj, Maharashtra is set to introduce a novel helicopter tourism circuit for the upcoming Nashik Kumbh
Mela. This initiative aims to significantly ease the anticipated road congestion during the massive religious gathering, which is expected to draw tens of millions of devotees. The state tourism department is developing a comprehensive aerial network that will connect not only Nashik and Trimbakeshwar but also other significant pilgrimage and heritage locations within a 150-kilometer radius. This forward-thinking approach seeks to enhance the overall pilgrim experience by offering a swift and convenient alternative to traditional road travel, especially during peak bathing days like the Shahi Snan, Amrut Snan, and Nagar Pradakshina, when the influx of visitors will be at its highest.
Key Destinations Connected
The proposed helicopter circuit is designed to link several highly revered spiritual and historical sites, all strategically located within approximately 150 kilometers of Nashik. These include the world-renowned Sai Baba Temple in Shirdi, a pilgrimage magnet attracting lakhs of devotees monthly. Additionally, the circuit will offer aerial access to the Grishneshwar Temple in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva. Complementing these religious hubs are the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Ajanta and Ellora Caves, also in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, which draw both spiritual seekers and cultural tourists. Furthermore, the Bhimashankar Temple, another of the twelve Jyotirlingas, nestled amidst the scenic Sahyadri hills in Pune district, will be part of this ambitious network, promising unparalleled accessibility for pilgrims and tourists alike.
Scale of Expected Crowds
The Nashik Kumbh Mela, also known as Simhastha Kumbh, is slated to commence in October 2025 and will continue for an extensive period, concluding in July 2028, spanning roughly 20 months. During the most significant ritualistic occasions, particularly the Shahi Snan, Amrut Snan, and Nagar Pradakshina, authorities estimate that between 90 to 100 lakh (9 to 10 million) devotees will be present. Considering the prolonged duration of the event and the multiple major bathing dates, the total number of attendees throughout the entire Kumbh is projected to be substantially higher. To manage and facilitate this immense congregation, the state and central governments are jointly investing over Rs 15,000 crore in upgrading infrastructure, improving logistics, and undertaking promotional activities for the Mela.
Operational Framework
The state government plans to contract private agencies for the operation of the helicopter services. The final pricing structures and the shuttle schedules will be determined through a transparent competitive bidding process. While the fare details are yet to be officially announced, they are expected to be released publicly as the commencement of the Kumbh approaches. On the logistical front, district administrations across Maharashtra have been mandated to ensure the availability of helipads in close proximity to major pilgrimage sites. These helipads will be strategically located near key temples and attractions, with district authorities responsible for identifying suitable land and developing the necessary infrastructure to support seamless aerial connectivity for devotees.
Precedent of Aerial Services
Maharashtra's foray into helicopter services for pilgrimage is not an isolated phenomenon in India. Several other prominent religious sites have already established or are in the process of implementing similar aerial transport options. For instance, the Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu & Kashmir offers helicopter services between Katra and Sanjichhat, drastically reducing travel time. Kedarnath in Uttarakhand has highly sought-after chopper services from various helipads, making the journey significantly quicker post the 2013 floods. Beyond Kedarnath, helicopter packages covering the entire Char Dham circuit in Uttarakhand are widely available. Notably, Shirdi already benefits from existing private helicopter services from Mumbai and Pune, reinforcing its inclusion in the Nashik Kumbh circuit. Other locations like Tirupati, Sabrimala, and Hemkund Sahib also utilize or have explored helicopter services to enhance accessibility for pilgrims, especially the elderly and differently-abled.
