Netherlands' Solid Total
The Netherlands set a challenging target of 147 runs in their opening encounter of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026. Skipper Scott Edwards led the charge
with a valuable 37 runs, providing a crucial anchor for his team. Bas de Leede contributed a solid 30 runs, while Michael Levitt added a brisk 24, helping the Dutch build a respectable total. Pakistan's bowling attack showed its mettle, with Salman Mirza being the standout performer, claiming three wickets. Mohammad Nawaz, Abrar Ahmed, and Saim Ayub also made significant contributions with the ball, each securing a couple of dismissals, ensuring the pressure remained on the Netherlands' batsmen.
Pakistan's Chase Struggles
Chasing the target, Pakistan's openers, Sahibzada Farhan and Saim Ayub, provided a strong foundation, accumulating 71 runs together. However, the momentum shifted as Babar Azam, batting at number four, struggled to accelerate, managing only 15 runs from 18 deliveries. The Dutch bowlers, particularly Roelen van der Merwe who dismissed Azam in the 13th over, applied significant pressure and slowed down Pakistan's scoring rate. A spate of lower-order wickets followed, showcasing a disciplined bowling effort from the Netherlands. Aryan Dutt and Paul van Meekeren were instrumental in this, each grabbing two wickets. Even single-digit scores from Usman Khan, Shadab Khan, and Nawaz added to the tension.
Ashraf's Heroics Seal Victory
With Pakistan in a precarious position, Faheem Ashraf emerged as the unlikely hero, delivering a match-winning performance. He smashed an incredible 29 runs off just 11 deliveries, including two boundaries and three towering sixes. This explosive cameo provided the much-needed impetus for Pakistan to cross the finish line with three balls to spare. The victory was critical for Pakistan, especially given their forfeited match against India, which makes almost every remaining game a must-win scenario for their Super 8 qualification hopes. A defeat in this opening fixture would have severely hampered their prospects in the tournament.
