A Kitchen Awakens
In Ahmedabad, a sunlit kitchen became the unlikely headquarters for a business that blossomed not from a formal plan, but from a deep well of love and
a lifetime of cherished recipes. Prabhavati Nani, a woman in her late nineties, unexpectedly found herself at the center of national attention, even capturing the admiration of Anand Mahindra. Yet, for her, the true essence lies in the simple, heartfelt act of nourishing others, a practice she has always embraced with genuine warmth and soulfulness, continuing her lifelong dedication to preparing food with extra care and affection, making each dish a testament to her enduring spirit and culinary heritage.
Finding Light After Loss
For close to seven decades, Prabhavati Bhagwati’s days unfolded with a comforting regularity, marked by shared moments with her husband of 68 years. His passing in 2017 left an immense void, rendering their home eerily quiet and the once-cherished kitchen feeling uncomfortably cold. With her children grown and her grandchildren immersed in their own busy lives, Prabhavati found herself confronting a profound solitude, a state often associated with the twilight years of life. However, fate had a different trajectory in store. At a gathering with friends, she brought along her signature khandvi, a delicacy known for its intricate preparation. The reaction was overwhelming; guests weren't just impressed, they were captivated. The suggestion that she sell a batch for an event ignited a flicker of possibility, hinting at a new chapter waiting to be written through her culinary talents.
From Grief to 'Nani's Nashta'
Launching a food business at the age of 90 might seem daunting to many, but for Prabhavati, it offered a vital sense of purpose and a therapeutic outlet. By 2018, 'Nani's Nashta' was established, not through elaborate marketing campaigns or venture capital, but through the organic spread of positive word-of-mouth and the ubiquitous WhatsApp network. The true magic behind her success isn't a secret ingredient, but the sheer authenticity and tradition embedded in her cooking. Her kitchen consistently produces a range of beloved dishes, including the light and airy dhoklas and the portable, flavorful theplas. She also offers comforting treats like the wholesome bhakri, the vibrant pav bhaji, and the ever-popular pav vada. The star, of course, remains the renowned khandvi that first sparked this entrepreneurial endeavor, a dish that continues to delight customers with its unique texture and taste.
Purpose Beyond Age
Presently, Prabhavati’s culinary enterprise serves more than 200 families each week, transforming her kitchen from a place of quiet solitude into a lively neighborhood hub. Patrons often visit for a quick snack but linger for the wisdom and warmth she offers. Anand Mahindra aptly highlighted her story as a universal source of inspiration, demonstrating that purpose transcends age. In a society that often emphasizes early achievement, Prabhavati is living proof that our drive to contribute and find meaning doesn't diminish with time. She chose to let her cooking speak volumes, overcoming grief and proving that it's never too late to redefine one's life path. Her simple yet profound message resonates: 'Age is just a number. You can start any day and change the script of your life.'
