The Deceptive Call
A local trader, Sanjay Saxena, and his wife found themselves ensnared by a malicious scheme orchestrated by cybercriminals. Posing as representatives of
an investigative agency, the fraudsters initiated contact from an untraceable number. They fabricated accusations, alleging Saxena's involvement in terrorist activities and a significant financial scam. The deception escalated to the point where a fake arrest warrant was presented during a video call, intensifying the couple's fear and making them compliant with the callers' demands. This initial phase of the scam was crucial in establishing the attackers' authority and creating an atmosphere of panic, paving the way for further exploitation.
Coercion and Surveillance
Under duress, the couple followed the scammers' stringent instructions, which included remaining confined to their home and staying on a continuous video call for the entire duration of the scam. Their every move was monitored, creating a sense of complete isolation and helplessness. The fraudsters leveraged this control to extract sensitive banking information, with intentions to siphon off substantial sums of money. For hours, the couple endured this terrifying situation, too intimidated to question the authenticity of the claims made against them, highlighting the psychological manipulation employed by the criminals.
Son's Intervention
The tide turned late at night when their son, Tanmay, became suspicious of his parents' unusual and fearful behavior. Despite his parents' initial reluctance, Tanmay recognized the signs of a potential scam and acted decisively. He quickly switched the phone to flight mode, an ingenious move that immediately disrupted the ongoing cyberattack. This swift and effective action by the young boy was instrumental in halting the fraudsters' progress and preventing any financial losses from occurring, showcasing the power of timely intervention and basic technological awareness.
Reporting and Police Action
The following morning, the family, shaken but unharmed, reported the entire incident to the Prem Nagar police station. Their proactive step allowed law enforcement to become involved. Coincidentally, when the phone was reactivated, the scammers attempted to re-establish contact, only to be met by police officers who answered the call. This led to the immediate registration of a case. SP City, Manush Pareek, urged citizens to exercise extreme caution and report any calls involving threats or claims of 'digital arrest' to the authorities without delay, emphasizing the importance of not divulging financial details under duress.
