The railway operates seasonally, typically opening its doors from February through the end of the holiday season, with this year's operations commencing on February 14th. Tickets are affordably priced at $34 for adults and $15 for children, making this historical adventure accessible to many.

This captivating rail journey follows a route reminiscent of the path early 20th-century tourists took to reach the entrance of Mount Rainier National Park. A truly awe-inspiring moment occurs as you traverse the Nisqually River Trestle, offering a remarkably clear and unobstructed view of the park's iconic, snow-capped peak. Eric Mencis, the hospitality manager at Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad, highlights the historical significance of the line: “We run on the Tacoma and Eastern rail line,” he explains. “Beginning in 1906, that’s what people used to take to get to the entrance of the national park at Ashford, Washington. From there, they’d take stagecoaches up to Mount Rainier.” This connection to the past adds a profound layer to the already stunning scenery.
Resurrection and Revival
After a period of closure necessitated by the pandemic, the Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad has been revitalized. In 2023, Eric Mencis, alongside a dedicated team of eleven fellow railway aficionados, successfully resurrected this nonprofit organization. Their primary objective is to offer travelers a unique opportunity to connect with both the rich history of the Cascade Mountains and their present-day breathtaking beauty. As the train makes its way towards Mineral, passengers are treated to rare, unobstructed vistas of Mount Rainier, the undisputed tallest peak in the entire Cascade Range. Mencis further elaborates on the scenic progression: “As you travel, you head into the woods, following the river, and often in springtime, we see elk,” he shares. “We cross the Nisqually River, and that's where you get your view of Mount Rainier.” This immersive experience allows visitors to appreciate the natural splendor and historical narrative of the region.

For those arriving from out of state and flying into Seattle, the Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad presents a remarkably convenient gateway to Mount Rainier National Park. Given that visitors typically drive past Elbe on their way to the park's southwest entrance, integrating the train ride into their itinerary is seamless. This railway is an excellent option for individuals who may not be planning strenuous hikes within Mount Rainier or for travelers with mobility challenges. It provides an effortless and comfortable way to immerse oneself in one of the Pacific Northwest's most iconic and majestic landscapes, all from the cozy confines of a charming, retro railcar.
