A Storied Past
Perched over 7,700 feet on Shimla's Jakhu Hill, Jungle House is more than just a homestay; it's a living piece of history. Its foundations trace back to the
1880s, a time when Shimla served as the summer capital for the British Raj. Originally built by an early English settler who acquired the land from a local shepherd, the cottage witnessed significant historical shifts. A pivotal chapter unfolded in 1940 when Princess Kusum of Bharatpur, returning from England at the onset of World War II with her infant son and nanny, was captivated by Shimla, a place she cherished from her youth. Legend has it that during a picnic, she stumbled upon the cottage and was instantly smitten. The tale continues with the owner reportedly falling for the nanny, leading to a serendipitous acquisition of the property by the Princess, affectionately known as Bibi ji. Since 1941, Jungle House has remained a cherished family legacy, silently observing the waning days of the Raj, the dawn of Indian independence, and the formation of Himachal Pradesh.
Authentic Country House Experience
For many decades, Jungle House maintained its identity as a private family sanctuary. It wasn't until 2022 that Bibi ji's daughter, Asha, alongside her son Karan and his wife Minky, made the heartfelt decision to open a portion of this ancestral home to discerning travelers. Their vision was to meticulously preserve the home's profound legacy and offer guests a truly authentic hill station country house experience. This initiative aims to share the unique ambiance and historical resonance of their cherished home with a wider audience, ensuring its stories and character continue to be appreciated. The opening reflects a desire to share the tranquil beauty and historical depth of Jungle House while maintaining its intimate and personal feel.
Architectural Grace & Interiors
Nestled high on the wooded inclines of Jakhu Hill, a scenic 3km stroll from Shimla's vibrant Mall, Jungle House is enveloped in the serene embrace of cedar trees and quietude. It commands breathtaking vistas of surrounding ridges and distant Himalayan peaks. Constructed in the 1880s, the cottage impeccably reflects the architectural sensibilities of its era, featuring elegant sloping roofs, deep verandahs, tall sash windows, lustrous teak floors, and classic fireplaces. Its design emphasizes intimate proportions over grandiosity, imbuing the space with the genuine warmth of a cherished family dwelling rather than a sterile heritage hotel. Inside, the house continues this immersion into a bygone era, with a significant portion of the furnishings originating from the 1930s and 40s, a period marked by the Art Deco style. These pieces have been thoughtfully updated to integrate modern comforts and a touch of luxury, creating a harmonious blend of vintage appeal and contemporary refinement.
Luxurious Suites & Amenities
Jungle House features two generously appointed suites, each offering a distinct yet equally luxurious experience. The Chelsea Suite, the larger of the two, provides expansive views overlooking the Choor Chandni peak and the sweeping valleys beyond. Its design is marked by an impressive 18-foot-high wood-panelled ceiling that amplifies the sense of spaciousness, complemented by a loft area that serves as an intimate retreat for an additional guest. Large windows flood the suite with natural light, while a dedicated dressing room and a bathroom equipped with a freestanding tub positioned by the window enhance the feeling of openness and tranquility. The Holly Suite, while more intimate in scale, offers a serene outlook towards a hillside adorned with wildflowers and deodar trees. It boasts a private sit-out area that effectively blurs the lines between indoor comfort and the surrounding natural beauty. Exposed wooden beams, carefully selected artwork, and traditional oriental rugs contribute to a warm and textured ambiance. Across both suites, subtle yet impactful details have been incorporated to underscore a profound connection to the locale. These include luxurious Himachali Pashmina throws and art that thoughtfully reflects the picturesque landscape and the rich tapestry of the family's history. Guests are also granted access to the welcoming anteroom and the elegant main lounge, spaces designed for convivial dinners or quiet contemplation amidst an extensive library.
Gracious Hosting & Personal Touch
Jungle House operates seamlessly as a cherished family home, with Asha, Bibi ji's daughter, residing on the property full-time and personally overseeing its daily operations. Her decades of living within its walls have endowed her with an intimate knowledge of every room, every nook, and every story the house holds. Her constant presence imbues Jungle House with its distinctive character, fostering a palpable sense of care that stems not from a commercial obligation, but from a deep, personal affection for the place. She acts as the house's living memory and its most captivating storyteller. Asha's son, Karan, embodies the ideal host, anticipating guests' needs and desires with remarkable foresight. Leveraging his extensive experience in hospitality and travel, he meticulously crafts each guest's visit, considering everything from desired experiences and the ideal pace to the subtle details that elevate a good trip into an unforgettable one. He often joins guests on their excursions, offering personal insights and guidance. Minky, who was born and raised in Shimla and possesses 40 years of combined experience in hospitality and advertising, takes charge of curating the culinary journey. "We engage in detailed conversations with every guest prior to their arrival," Karan explains. "Our aim is to understand not just their practical requirements, but the essence of the holiday they truly need," Minky adds. "This allows us to tailor menus, experiences, and the rhythm of each day to perfectly suit their preferences." The devoted staff, many of whom have been with the family for generations, are integral to the Jungle House experience, contributing to a sense of continuity that transcends professional training. Together, they diligently preserve the enduring spirit of Jungle House: a sanctuary of privacy and personal connection.
Culinary Delights with a View
Dining at Jungle House is consistently lauded by guests as one of its most outstanding features. Breakfast is a leisurely and generous affair, offering a diverse range from classics like Eggs Benedict and fluffy pancakes to authentic Indian options, adjusted to the morning's mood. Lunch typically focuses on hearty Himachali and pan-Indian dishes, perfectly suited to the invigorating mountain air. As Karan aptly notes, "Local food just feels right for the hills." Dinner, however, is the culinary highlight that everyone eagerly anticipates, as it features cherished family recipes. A standout dish is the Bharatpur Chicken, a creation perfected by Bibi ji's brother and still prepared according to his original formula. The dessert menu also boasts a dedicated following, with the house's decadent Chocolate Biscuit Pudding, a rich Chocolate Marquis, and Minky's inspired rendition of Khubani ka Meetha being particular favorites. Depending on the prevailing weather, meals are artfully served either al fresco or within the cozy confines of the lounge, where inviting fireplaces and an extensive library create a charming ambiance around the dining table. Every evening, guests are treated to an Aperitivo Hour, featuring delightful sundowner cocktails and hors d'oeuvres, all enjoyed while taking in the breathtaking spectacle of the hills bathed in the golden hues of sunset. For those seeking an even more intimate experience, Karan and Minky are more than happy to arrange a special picnic breakfast or a romantic dinner for two in the garden, illuminated by the warm glow of firelight. "Food here has always been prepared with love, and that, above all else, is what we want our guests to carry with them," Karan shares.
Curated Experiences & Activities
Life at Jungle House unfolds at a pace dictated by the rhythms of the mountains. Given that the estate is nestled within an ancient cedar forest, a significant part of the guest experience begins right outside your doorstep. Immerse yourself in the tranquility of the surrounding cedar and oak groves with a guided forest bathing session, known in Japanese as Shinrin-yoku, offering a gentle and restorative introduction to the mountain environment. For those with a more adventurous spirit, a trek up to Jakhu Mandir, an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman, presents an invigorating challenge. Jungle House also offers the unique privilege of a picnic breakfast atop Shimla's highest peak. History enthusiasts can embark on a heritage walk, guided by an expert on Shimla's Raj-era past, to uncover the hill station's most compelling stories. For a longer excursion, consider a half-day trip to the historic Naldehra Golf Course, one of India's oldest, established in 1905 by Viceroy Lord Curzon, or explore the nearby attractions of Kufri and the therapeutic hot springs at Tattapani. Depending on the season, guests can enjoy ice skating at Shimla's open-air rink or partake in skiing at Narkanda. For those yearning for deeper Himalayan exploration, specialized treks led by professional guides and motorcycle tours personally conducted by renowned Indian rally drivers are available. Alternatively, for a more relaxed pace, find solace in a fragrant garden nook with a good book, indulge in a leisurely game of croquet on the lawns, or find deep comfort within the lounge and its well-appointed library.
