A New Era Dawns
The much-anticipated Vande Bharat Express has begun its commercial operations, linking Jammu Tawi and Srinagar, a development celebrated with considerable
enthusiasm. This semi-high-speed train service, which commenced two days after its official inauguration, represents a monumental achievement in enhancing the railway network's reach within the region. Previously operating between Srinagar and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, the service has now been extended to connect directly with Jammu Tawi. The train, adorned with festive decorations, departed from Jammu railway station, signaling a significant advancement for modern rail travel and the 'Make in India' initiative. This launch signifies the beginning of a new chapter in connectivity for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Swift Journey, Vast Savings
The Vande Bharat Express drastically shortens the journey between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar, covering the approximately 272 km distance in just 4 hours and 50 minutes. This is a remarkable improvement compared to the 12 to 24 hours previously required by road, a duration heavily influenced by prevailing road conditions. Operating six days a week, excluding Tuesdays, the train significantly reduces travel time, making it a game-changer for those traversing between these two vital cities. The service offers two daily return trips, providing convenient travel options for a diverse range of passengers, including tourists eager to explore the region and pilgrims en route to sacred sites.
Passenger Experiences & Impact
The inaugural commercial runs of the Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express saw impressive occupancy, with approximately 940 passengers on the first train and 995 on the second heading towards Srinagar. The return journeys were equally popular, carrying over 1,990 passengers. Passengers on board described the service as a 'dream come true' and a 'game-changer.' Many highlighted the considerable time savings and the elimination of travel uncertainties associated with highway journeys. The affordability, with fares around Rs 600, combined with a comfortable and jam-free experience, has been particularly praised for boosting tourism. Commuters like Sunita Sharma from Jammu and Murtaza Sharief from Akhnoor expressed how the train strengthens inter-regional bonds and enables convenient same-day travel. Shishir Rajan from Kathua noted the improved accessibility, especially when highways face closures, while tourist Arvind Singh from Amritsar emphasized the enhanced safety and convenience, viewing the service as a symbol of India's progressing infrastructure.
Technological Marvel
The Vande Bharat Express is a testament to India's engineering prowess, equipped with the latest and most advanced technology developed domestically. Its successful launch is the culmination of decades of dedicated effort and overcoming significant engineering challenges, particularly in the construction of the Udhampur-Baramulla rail link. Despite the numerous hurdles encountered during the project's execution, the service is now set to operate smoothly, heralding a new era of rail connectivity for Jammu and Kashmir. The train's advanced features and capabilities underscore India's growing self-reliance in critical infrastructure development.
