Jodhpur Airport Essentials
Jodhpur Airport, identified by the IATA code JDH, serves as a vital domestic air travel hub for Rajasthan's iconic 'Blue City'. This dual-purpose facility
functions as both a civilian airport operated by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and a significant military airbase, housing squadrons of advanced fighter jets. Its strategic importance is underscored by its operational history dating back to 1920, initially as a flying club and later serving during World War II and the Kargil War. The airport boasts a runway measuring 2,743 meters in length and 45 meters in width, situated on 12 acres of land. The existing passenger terminal spans 5,690 square meters and includes an apron capable of accommodating three parking bays, sufficient for two Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 aircraft. Essential navigational aids like an Instrument Landing System (ILS), DVOR/DME, and NDB are in place, ensuring safe operations even during night landings.
Terminal Facilities and Airlines
Jodhpur Airport prioritizes passenger convenience with a comprehensive suite of amenities. Travelers can utilize seven check-in counters, three boarding gates, and avail themselves of baggage services, luggage trolleys, and a lost and found facility. For added comfort, the airport offers food joints, cafeterias, a lounge, and Wi-Fi internet access. Essential services like an ATM counter, mobile charging points, and medical facilities are readily available. Shoppers can explore the onboard shopping center, and car parking is provided for convenience. Tourist information is also accessible. A diverse range of airlines operate from JDH, including Air India, Alliance Air, IndiGo, SpiceJet, and Star Air. These carriers connect Jodhpur to major metropolitan cities such as Mumbai and Delhi, as well as other key destinations like Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Indore, Jaipur, Kolkata (seasonally), and Belgaum, ensuring extensive domestic connectivity.
New Terminal Expansion
A significant transformation is underway at Jodhpur Civil Airport with the development of a new, integrated terminal building. This ambitious project, which began with the foundation stone laid on October 5, 2023, involves an investment of Rs. 480 crore. The new terminal will boast a sprawling 24,000 square meters, making it approximately four times larger than the current structure. This expansion is designed to significantly enhance passenger handling capacity, with plans for 40 check-in counters and the ability to service 10 aircraft movements per hour. Once operational, the expanded airport is projected to handle 35 lakh passengers annually, thereby boosting tourism and economic activity. The expansion was facilitated by the Indian Air Force surrendering 37 acres of land in May 2021, paving the way for enhanced civil aviation infrastructure.
Temporary Closure and Real Estate Impact
Jodhpur Airport experienced a temporary closure of its civil flight operations from March 29 to April 27, 2026. This pause was necessary for essential runway recarpeting, a crucial maintenance task given the runway's extensive use by both military and civilian aircraft. During this period, airlines ceased bookings past the March 28 deadline. Beyond the operational upgrade, the development of the new terminal is poised to significantly stimulate the real estate market in areas surrounding the airport. Localities within a 4-kilometer radius, such as Ratanada and Air Force Area, are anticipated to see a rise in property values. The Air Force Area predominantly features 2 BHK apartments, with a substantial percentage of properties priced between Rs. 40 Lac and Rs. 60 Lac. Ratanada, a popular residential and tourist spot, offers housing options starting from Rs. 40 Lac, with a preference for 3 BHK apartments among buyers.
Connectivity and Nearby Attractions
Jodhpur Airport offers convenient access to the city center and other key transport hubs. Located just 3.2 kilometers from the Jodhpur city center via NH 62, it's easily reachable by taxi or bus. The Jodhpur Railway Station is a mere 5.9 kilometers away, a short 15-20 minute drive via Civil Airport Road. Similarly, the Jodhpur Bus Stand is situated 5.7 kilometers from the airport, accessible within 10-15 minutes via RJ SH61.
