A New Era Dawns
Indian Railways is stepping up its game in modernizing long-distance travel by approving the establishment of its second Vande Bharat Sleeper corridor.
This significant development follows closely on the heels of the successful inauguration of the first Vande Bharat sleeper service between Assam and Bengal, which has seen tremendous public uptake. The introduction of the Bengaluru to Mumbai Vande Bharat sleeper train signifies a commitment to enhancing connectivity between two of India's most vital economic hubs. Passengers can anticipate a swifter journey, a host of contemporary conveniences, and the assurance of daily overnight travel, transforming the way inter-city rail is perceived. The broader vision is to integrate a total of 12 such sleeper trains into the network by the end of 2026, all designed to elevate the standard of overnight rail travel with technological advancements and superior comfort.
Route and Amenities Unveiled
The highly anticipated second Vande Bharat Sleeper train route has been officially confirmed to operate between Karnataka's capital, KSR Bengaluru, and the bustling financial centre of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus Mumbai. This crucial announcement was conveyed by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The service is poised to offer a significantly improved travel experience, featuring modernized sleeping berths and interiors that are a leap from traditional train accommodations. Passengers can expect a smoother ride, enhanced safety protocols, and a generally more pleasant journey. The objective is to provide a compelling alternative to short-haul flights, particularly for individuals who prefer or require overnight travel, by delivering speed, comfort, and modern facilities directly to the rail network. This initiative is a cornerstone of the Indian Railways' strategy to revolutionize overnight inter-city rail experiences through innovative and technology-driven solutions.
Performance and Projections
The inaugural Vande Bharat sleeper train, launched between Kamakhya and Howrah, has already demonstrated remarkable success, attracting an occupancy rate exceeding 100% within its initial three months and transporting over 1.2 lakh passengers. This overwhelming response underscores the strong public appetite for premium overnight rail travel. Building on this momentum, the Bengaluru–Mumbai route is set to become the second operational Vande Bharat sleeper corridor. Railway officials indicate that two train rakes will be deployed, enabling a daily overnight service in both directions, ensuring robust connectivity. The existing travel options between these two major cities, such as the Udyan Express, currently take over 23 hours. While faster alternatives exist, they still require around 19 hours. The distance spanning approximately 1153 kilometers between CSMT and KSR Bengaluru is anticipated to be covered by the Vande Bharat sleeper in a much-reduced timeframe of around 12 to 13 hours, a substantial improvement for travelers.
