New Sleeper Route
Indian Railways has officially greenlit the country's second Vande Bharat sleeper corridor, a significant move following the successful launch of the first
route linking Assam and Bengal. This new premium overnight service is slated to operate between Bengaluru and Mumbai, two of India's most vital economic hubs. The announcement, confirmed by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, signals a robust acceleration in the modernization of India's long-distance rail infrastructure. This initiative is a critical component of a larger plan to introduce 12 Vande Bharat sleeper trains by the end of 2026, aiming to redefine inter-city overnight rail travel by making it considerably faster, more comfortable, and infused with advanced technology.
Enhanced Travel Experience
Passengers can anticipate a vastly improved travel experience on the Bengaluru–Mumbai Vande Bharat sleeper. This state-of-the-art train is designed to rival short-haul flights, particularly for those preferring overnight journeys. It promises to significantly cut down travel duration compared to existing options. The interiors will feature modern berths and amenities, ensuring a comfortable and restful journey. Furthermore, passengers can expect a smoother ride quality and enhanced safety features, reflecting Indian Railways' commitment to passenger well-being and modernizing the travel experience. The aim is to transform what was once a lengthy overnight train ride into a swift, pleasant, and technologically advanced experience.
Operational Details & Impact
To facilitate a daily overnight service in both directions, railway sources indicate that two separate Vande Bharat sleeper train sets will be deployed, one originating from each city. This strategic deployment will make the Bengaluru–Mumbai route the second operational Vande Bharat sleeper service in India. The existing train options between these two metropolises are considerably slower; the Udyan Express currently takes over 23 hours to complete the journey, while even faster alternatives require close to 19 hours. The distance spanning approximately 1153 kilometers between KSR Bengaluru and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus Mumbai is expected to be covered by the Vande Bharat sleeper in a significantly reduced timeframe of around 12 to 13 hours, marking a substantial leap in travel efficiency.
