operational, enhancing your visit. Prior to mid-June, you'll find fewer people, as school is still in session, offering a more tranquil atmosphere. Springtime showcases vibrant wildflowers and lush foliage, while the summer months are perfect for enjoying water sports on the lake. As autumn arrives, the crowds dwindle, and the park transforms with breathtaking mountain foliage, providing a picturesque setting for exploration and relaxation.
Hiking and Biking Trails
Rocky Gap State Park caters to all levels of outdoor enthusiasts with its extensive network of hiking and mountain biking trails. Whether you're seeking a leisurely stroll or a strenuous climb, there's a path for you. Casual walkers can enjoy short, quarter-mile nature overlooks, while more ambitious hikers can tackle the scenic 5.3-mile Lakeside Loop or challenging routes that ascend 1,000 feet. Cyclists will find many trails ideal for mountain biking, with the Lakeside Loop, Evitts Mountain Trail, and Rocky Trail being favorites. For those without their own equipment, seasonal bike rentals are available. The park also offers access to the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP), a renowned biking trail stretching 150 miles, connecting to other trails for an extensive cycling adventure.

The centerpiece of Rocky Gap State Park is the 243-acre Lake Habeeb, celebrated for having the bluest waters in Maryland. Adding to the canine-friendly atmosphere, dogs can even join in on canoe, kayak, and SUP rentals at no extra charge, with doggy life jackets readily available for their safety during water excursions.

Beyond the popular Lakeside Loop, Rocky Gap State Park boasts several other noteworthy trails. Evitts Mountain, named after an early settler, offers a four-mile round trip to a homesite or a six-mile round trip to an overlook. This trail is praised for its journey through a magical gorge with a meandering stream, dense rhododendrons, and towering hemlock forests, providing a cool retreat. For a more challenging and secluded hike, the Bear Ridge trail is recommended, as it descends into the gorge and loops back, often with fewer people and increased chances of spotting wildlife like deer and turkeys, and perhaps even a porcupine. Shorter, accessible options include the quarter-mile Gorge Overlook Trail and the paved Hemlock Trail, which leads to the fishing dock.

Dining within the park includes the Hawk's Nest Cafe, known for its custard ice cream, and the resort's restaurants, such as one specializing in filet with Maryland crab. Nearby, 1812 Brewery offers a relaxed, family- and dog-friendly atmosphere with live music and food trucks, while downtown Cumberland presents a wider array of culinary choices.
