The much-anticipated Nashik Kumbh Mela, also known as Simhastha Kumbh, is set to commence in October 2025 and extend its spiritual embrace until July 2028.
This grand event is expected to draw an immense congregation of devotees, with the peak footfall anticipated during significant ritualistic bathing days like the Shahi Snan, Amrut Snan, and Nagar Pradakshina. During these crucial periods, the banks of the Godavari River in Nashik and the adjacent town of Trimbakeshwar will transform into a vibrant hub, welcoming pilgrims from every corner of India and across the globe. To manage the anticipated influx and to ensure a smoother travel experience, the Maharashtra state government is pioneering a novel approach inspired by the success of similar services during the Prayagraj Kumbh Mela.
A Heli-Circuit for Devotees
The Maharashtra state tourism department has conceptualized an ambitious helicopter tourism circuit designed to link several significant pilgrimage and heritage locations scattered across western Maharashtra and Marathwada. This strategic initiative aims to alleviate the substantial road congestion that is a certainty around Nashik during the Kumbh, particularly on the busiest bathing days. The proposed heli-circuit is a direct response to the overwhelming success of aerial connectivity solutions implemented during the Prayagraj Kumbh Mela, where helicopters proved invaluable for pilgrims seeking to bypass extensive road gridlock. This forward-thinking proposal has already been discussed at high-level Kumbh Mela review meetings, indicating strong support from senior state officials and a commitment to enhancing the pilgrim journey through innovative transportation.
Destinations on the Route
The planned helicopter circuit is strategically positioned to connect a cluster of highly revered religious and heritage sites, all conveniently situated within an approximate 150-kilometer radius of Nashik. Among the key destinations slated for aerial connectivity are the Sai Baba Temple in Shirdi, a paramount pilgrimage site attracting lakhs of devotees monthly, and the Grishneshwar Temple in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, recognized as one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva. Further enriching the circuit are the Ajanta and Ellora Caves, also located in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, which are globally acclaimed UNESCO World Heritage Sites drawing a diverse crowd of both pilgrims and tourists. Lastly, the Bhimashankar Temple in Pune district, another esteemed Jyotirlinga nestled within the picturesque Sahyadri hills, will also be accessible via this aerial network, making spiritual journeys more efficient and enjoyable.
Scale of the Event
The scale of the Nashik Kumbh Mela is monumental, with state government projections estimating that 9 to 10 million (90 to 100 lakh) devotees will converge on the city during the peak ritual days alone. Considering the extensive 20-month duration of the festival and the multiple significant bathing dates scheduled, the total number of pilgrims experiencing the Kumbh is anticipated to be substantially higher. To adequately prepare for this immense gathering and to ensure seamless logistical arrangements, both the state and central governments are making a collective investment exceeding Rs 15,000 crore. This significant financial commitment is being channeled into upgrading infrastructure, enhancing logistics, and undertaking extensive promotional activities to ensure the smooth and successful execution of this world-renowned spiritual event.
Operational Details Emerge
The forthcoming helicopter services will be managed and operated by private aviation agencies, with the specific pricing structures and detailed shuttle schedules to be determined through a transparent and competitive bidding process. While the exact fare details are yet to be officially announced by the state, they are expected to be made public closer to the commencement of the Kumbh. On the infrastructure front, a crucial directive has been issued to district administrations across Maharashtra, mandating the establishment of helipads in close proximity to major pilgrimage sites and key attractions. While many districts already possess helipads, the emphasis is on ensuring their strategic placement to maximize convenience for pilgrims. District authorities will be responsible for identifying suitable land parcels and developing the necessary infrastructure to support these aerial operations, ensuring accessibility and ease of access for all.
