Sudden Online Scarcity
Across India, a palpable sense of anxiety surrounding liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder availability has triggered an unprecedented demand for electric
cooking alternatives. Platforms known for their swift delivery services, such as Blinkit, Zepto, Swiggy Instamart, and BigBasket, are now displaying "Unavailable" or "Sold Out" notifications for a significant number of induction cooktops in various cities. This sudden depletion highlights a widespread consumer effort to secure cooking methods independent of potential gas supply interruptions, particularly amplified by geopolitical events impacting energy resources in West Asia. The usual rapid replenishment of stock on these apps is no match for the current consumer urgency.
E-commerce Surge
The heightened interest in electric cooking appliances isn't confined to quick-commerce apps; major e-commerce giants like Amazon and Flipkart are also experiencing a substantial uptick in orders. An Amazon India spokesperson revealed that sales of induction cooktops have seen a remarkable increase, multiplying by over 30 times in just two days. Complementary kitchen gadgets are also benefiting from this trend, with rice cookers and electric pressure cookers witnessing nearly four times their usual sales figures, while air fryers and multi-use kettles are selling at roughly double their normal rates. This widespread demand across different online channels underscores a significant shift in consumer purchasing behavior.
Regional Demand Spikes
Flipkart has corroborated this trend, noting that induction cooktop sales have quadrupled in the past four to five days when compared to the preceding weeks. The company has identified specific regions experiencing particularly high demand spikes, including Delhi, Kolkata, and parts of Uttar Pradesh. These areas are actively seeking to secure alternative cooking solutions due to mounting concerns over potential price volatility and future supply shortages of cooking gas. The anxiety is evidently prompting consumers to act proactively to ensure continuity in their daily cooking routines, regardless of external supply chain uncertainties.
Government Response
In response to the growing concerns about cooking gas availability, the government has taken measures to bolster domestic supply. Oil marketing companies have reportedly instructed LPG distributors to prioritize essential institutions like hospitals and educational facilities. Concurrently, the government has ramped up domestic LPG production by approximately 25 percent, directing the entire output towards household consumers to ensure an uninterrupted supply amidst the evolving global energy landscape. This proactive government intervention aims to alleviate consumer anxieties and maintain stability in the cooking gas market.
