Afternoon Heatwave
Mumbai experienced a significant heatwave on Thursday afternoon, with temperatures soaring. Automatic weather stations across the city recorded readings
well above the norm. For instance, the Ram Mandir station registered 37 degrees Celsius, while Vikhroli and Bandra noted 35 degrees Celsius. Similarly, Thane's meteorological office also recorded a high of 37 degrees Celsius. These elevated temperatures were part of a yellow alert issued for the entire Konkan region, predicting hot and humid conditions that were expected to persist until Saturday. This intense heat set the stage for the subsequent atmospheric changes observed later in the day, highlighting the volatile nature of the weather in the region during this period.
Sudden Gusty Winds
Around 4 pm, a dramatic shift occurred as strong, gusty winds swept through Thane, Navi Mumbai, and various suburban areas of Mumbai. These winds stirred up dust across multiple localities, creating a noticeable disturbance. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) responded by issuing a nowcast warning for Thane, Navi Mumbai, and surrounding districts including Palghar, Raigad, and Ratnagiri. This warning indicated a possibility of winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph, accompanied by the potential for thunderstorms, lightning, and rain. This sudden onset of windy conditions occurred despite the absence of immediate thunderstorm warnings, catching many by surprise.
Meteorological Explanation
IMD Director Bikram Singh elucidated the cause of these stormy conditions, attributing them to the development of nearby thunderclouds. He explained that an active cyclonic circulation, combined with atmospheric moisture and heat, facilitates cloud formation. Even though the thunderclouds were located several kilometers away, their proximity was sufficient to generate strong gusty winds that affected the nearby regions. This phenomenon resulted in the observed stormy activity, particularly impacting the eastern suburbs of Mumbai. This event underscores how localized atmospheric dynamics can lead to distinct weather patterns, even without direct cloudbursts over the populated areas.
Fleeting Storm, No Rain
Despite the nowcast warning issued at 4 pm, the storm-like activity was notably brief, and crucially, rain, thunder, and lightning eluded the city. By 5:30 pm, IMD observatories reported 'NIL' rainfall in Mumbai and its surrounding areas, indicating that the predicted showers did not materialize. Later, at 5:05 pm, the IMD updated its forecast for Thane and Palghar, placing them under a yellow alert for potential thunderstorms and light rain until Friday morning. However, the initial stormy gusts did not bring any precipitation, leaving the region dry. This contrast between the strong winds and the absence of rain highlights the complex and sometimes unpredictable nature of weather systems.
