Essential Pet Documentation
Before even considering a train journey with your pet, it's crucial to understand that proper documentation is non-negotiable. Indian Railways mandates
that all pets, including cats and dogs, must possess a valid vaccination certificate. Failing to present this certificate can lead to your pet being denied boarding or even removed from the train, potentially resulting in fines for the passenger. Recent times have seen an uptick in passengers attempting to travel with young animals in general coaches, often leading to official intervention due to the absence of the required paperwork. Therefore, ensuring your pet is up-to-date with its vaccinations and carrying the certificate is the first and most vital step for a compliant and hassle-free travel experience.
Canine Companions on Board
When it comes to travelling with dogs on Indian Railways, specific rules apply based on the coach class. Dogs are generally not permitted in ordinary passenger coaches. However, they can travel in First AC compartments. Specifically, dogs are allowed in First AC two-berth coupes and four-berth cabins, but with a strict condition: all tickets for the accompanying passengers must be booked under a single Passenger Name Record (PNR) number. Alternatively, dogs can be transported in a dedicated 'dog box,' typically located near the guard's compartment. If opting for the dog box, the passenger who booked the ticket must travel on the same train. Pet owners are responsible for their dog's feeding throughout the journey. Regardless of whether they travel in First AC or the dog box, passengers must carry essential documents. These include a copy of the owner's identity card, the pet's vaccination certificate, and a 'fit-to-travel' certificate, which must be issued within 24 hours of the departure. Booking tickets for First AC travel can be done online, while booking for the dog box requires a visit to the railway office in person.
Feline Friends & Feathered Companions
Cats have a more flexible travel arrangement on Indian Railways; they can be accommodated in any class of travel. The primary requirement is that they must be securely housed in a basket and should not cause any disturbance to fellow passengers. Much like dogs, cats also necessitate the same set of essential documents for travel. This includes the owner's identity proof and a valid vaccination certificate. For smaller avian companions, such as lovebirds, they can be transported provided they are kept in secure cages. The railway administration also has provisions for transporting larger animals like horses; these are typically carried in special luggage vans, adhering to specific railway rules.
Before You Depart
To ensure a completely smooth transit for yourself and your pet, it is highly recommended to get in touch with the concerned railway station well in advance of your planned travel date. This proactive step allows you to confirm all pertinent details, such as the exact luggage charges applicable for your pet, the designated reporting time at the station, and any other specific instructions that might be in place. Such communication can preempt potential issues and guarantee a more organized and pleasant travel experience for everyone involved.
