Gifting serves as a profound expression of human connection, conveying sentiments of love, gratitude, and respect. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently
embarked on a significant five-nation tour, visiting the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Italy. During this tour, he embraced the spirit of thoughtful giving by presenting a diverse collection of culturally rich culinary items to the leaders of these nations. This gesture underscores the idea that strong connections can be forged and strengthened through shared culinary experiences, proving that a bond built over food can indeed be enduring.
Grains of Distinction
During his interactions, PM Modi presented a meticulously curated assortment of India's finest grains to Dr. Qu Dongyu, the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. This collection featured the distinctive Red Rice, also recognized as Matta or Palakkadan Matta. Hailing primarily from the Palakkad district in Kerala, this traditional rice variety is characterized by its reddish-brown hue, robust grains, and significant nutritional profile. Its outer bran layer is preserved, contributing to its high content of fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Importantly, this rice has earned a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, acknowledging its unique origin and quality. Alongside Red Rice, the basket included UP's special Kalanamak rice, affectionately known as Buddha Rice. With historical associations dating back to the era of Gautama Buddha, this GI-tagged rice is celebrated for its unique fragrance, dark husk, tender texture, and impressive nutritional value, boasting high levels of iron and antioxidants.
West Bengal's Fragrant Rice
Further enriching the collection of indigenous produce, PM Modi presented Gobindobhog rice from West Bengal. This premium, locally cultivated rice variety is traditionally grown in districts such as Burdwan, Hooghly, and Nadia. This GI-tagged rice is a staple in preparing festive dishes like khichuri and pulao, as well as sweet payesh, and is often used in religious offerings. Its appeal lies in its natural, delightful fragrance and exceptional cooking qualities, making it a cornerstone of Bengali culinary traditions. The distinctive flavor and superior texture of Gobindobhog rice lend it significant cultural and gastronomic importance in the region.
Assam's Aromatic Joha Rice
From the verdant Brahmaputra valley in Assam, Joha rice was also part of the curated gifts. The name 'Joha' itself originates from an Assamese term signifying 'fragrant.' This particular variety of rice typically features small grains and is widely employed in crafting traditional Assamese cuisine, festive meals, and special celebratory dishes. Joha rice has been awarded a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, a recognition that aids in preserving its authenticity and provides support to local farmers. Beyond its esteemed culinary value, it is also recognized for being nutritious and easily digestible. This special rice serves as a vibrant reflection of Assam's rich agricultural heritage and deeply ingrained cultural traditions.
The Global Appeal of Basmati
Basmati rice, originating from the Indo-Gangetic plains, was another esteemed gift, renowned globally for its characteristic long grains. This aromatic rice is celebrated for its subtle fragrance, slender appearance, and exceptionally soft, fluffy texture once cooked. It is extensively cultivated across Indian states including Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and certain areas of Uttar Pradesh. Its rich aroma and superior cooking properties make it the preferred choice for dishes like biryani, pulao, and fried rice. Highly valued in both domestic and international markets, Indian Basmati rice is regarded as one of the world's finest rice varieties. Its distinct regional identity and traditional cultivation methods are further underscored by its Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
Manipur's Loktak Tea
A unique offering from the northeastern state of Manipur, Loktak tea was gifted to Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. This special variety of tea is cultivated in the picturesque environs surrounding Loktak Lake, a significant natural landmark in the region. Loktak tea is distinguished by its wonderfully refreshing flavor, a pleasant and inviting aroma, and a remarkably smooth finish. Experts suggest that the tea's exceptional qualities are a result of its cultivation in the pure and fertile soil of the surrounding hills, allowing it to embody the rich biodiversity and natural splendor of Manipur.
Sweetness from Meghalaya
President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan of the UAE received a delightful gift of Meghalaya Pineapple. This fruit, also bearing a GI tag, is closely associated with the Khasi Pineapple variety, predominantly grown in the Ri-Bhoi district of Meghalaya. It is highly acclaimed for its exceptional sweetness, captivating aroma, and the fact that it is cultivated using organic farming practices. These pineapples are savored fresh and are also popular ingredients in juices, various desserts, jams, and other processed food items, showcasing the tropical richness of the region.
Gujarat's Saffron Mango
Continuing the sweet offerings to the UAE's President, Kesar Mango was also presented. This celebrated mango variety, native to Gujarat and distinguished by its vibrant, saffron-colored pulp, holds a Geographical Indication (GI) tag. Primarily cultivated in the areas surrounding the Gir forest and the Junagadh district, Kesar mangoes are exceptionally versatile. They are particularly favored for preparing 'aamras,' a popular mango pulp dish, as well as being used in various desserts and refreshing juices, embodying the quintessential taste of Indian summers.
Wholesome Millet Bars
The Prime Minister was also presented with millet bars crafted from Jowar and Bajra. Jowar, commonly known as sorghum, is a nutritional powerhouse, abundant in dietary fiber, protein, iron, and valuable antioxidants. Bajra, or pearl millet, offers an excellent source of energy and is rich in calcium, magnesium, and other essential nutrients. These millets are fundamental food staples in numerous rural communities across India, frequently utilized in preparing traditional dishes like rotis, porridge, and khichdi, highlighting their importance in the Indian diet.
Italy's Iconic Melody Toffee
A unique and nostalgic treat, Melody toffee, was gifted to the Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni. This iconic Indian confection is cherished for its distinctive dual flavor profile, offering a delightful combination of caramel and chocolate. It features a creamy chocolate center that delivers a rich, cocoa-like taste, complemented by an outer layer of chewy caramel that imparts a buttery sweetness with a classic toffee essence, making it a memorable indulgence.
