Embrace the Wood
For those with honey oak cabinets who love a retro aesthetic, the key is to amplify the existing wood tones. One creative individual, who rented her space,
decided to 'lean into' her kitchen's inherent warmth by extending the wood look. She achieved this by applying a renter-friendly, peel-and-stick wood contact paper to the soffit above her cabinets, mimicking the color of the existing wood for a seamless extension. This technique was further utilized on another wall to evoke a distinct '70s-inspired paneled ambiance. To complete the look and enhance the crafted feel, she replaced the standard silver hardware with wooden cabinet handles, effectively tripling down on the wood aesthetic and making the honey oak appear as a deliberate, stylish choice rather than an outdated feature. This approach demonstrates how working with and enhancing existing elements can lead to a cohesive and intentional design.
Counteract with Color
Alternatively, dated honey-toned wood cabinets can be beautifully updated by introducing contrasting colors. One homeowner strategically pulled from the subtle red undertones present in her wood cabinets by incorporating a pink peel-and-stick tile backsplash. She selected pink as it harmonized with her home's overall color palette, emphasizing the importance of a consistent color scheme for guiding design decisions. Further enhancing the space, she applied a stone-effect peel-and-stick paper to her countertops, replaced the existing hardware with elegant gold knobs, and introduced a white cupboard to blend discreetly with her white stove. This entire refresh, including new decor, cost a mere $250. The philosophy here is to work with what you have, rather than trying to force a different style. By choosing complementary colors and hardware, and creatively supplementing storage, the kitchen was transformed into a space that functions perfectly and looks decidedly chic, proving that small, thoughtful details can make a significant impact.
