New VFS Global Hub
For Indian travelers applying for visas to the UK, Ireland, and several European nations, a significant logistical change has occurred. Since January 12,
2026, applications for countries like Croatia, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Malta, Norway, Slovenia, and Sweden have consolidated at a new, centrally located VFS Global facility in New Delhi. This modern center, situated at VFS Global House, 27 Kasturba Gandhi Marg, Connaught Place, is designed to more than double the processing capacity, aiming to alleviate previous bottlenecks and streamline the application process during peak travel seasons. Notably, passport collection has also been relocated to this new address. It is crucial for applicants to be aware of this updated location and factor in any potential adjustments to appointment scheduling and retrieval timelines, especially when travel dates are fixed and time-sensitive.
UK E-Visa System
A major shift in how Indian citizens obtain UK visas commenced on February 25, 2026, with the nation's full transition to a mandatory e-visa system. This digital overhaul replaces the traditional vignette sticker visas and ink stamps, moving entirely online via the UK Visas and Immigration System (UKVI). The primary objectives behind this transition are to enhance the efficiency of the immigration process and bolster border security. For Indian applicants, the core application procedure remains consistent. However, two key changes streamline the experience: physical submission of passports is no longer required at any stage, and instead of a physical sticker, applicants will receive an e-visa. Accessing and managing visa details will be facilitated through a dedicated UKVI account.
Japan Visa Appointments
Beginning March 2, 2026, a new requirement for advance appointments has been implemented for individuals submitting Japan visa applications at specific centers serving South India. This rule now applies to all visa categories processed at VFS centers in Chennai, Kochi, Hyderabad, and Puducherry. Prospective applicants must now navigate an online portal to view available dates and secure their appointment slot, introducing an additional preparatory step. This system is already in effect at the Japan Visa Application Centre in Bengaluru. For applicants residing in other regions of India, the application process remains unchanged, allowing them to proceed with submissions at their local VFS Japan Visa Application Centres without the need for a prior booking.
USA Visa Wait Times
As of January 2026, prospective travelers to the USA from India can anticipate significantly reduced wait times for visa appointments. Major cities are reporting wait periods under three months: Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Mumbai each have an estimated wait of 2.5 months, while New Delhi is at 2 months, and Chennai at 1.5 months. It's important to remember that these times are dynamic and subject to change; consulting with the nearest embassy for the most current information is always advisable. Furthermore, a beneficial update implemented since January 2025 allows nonimmigrant visa (specifically B-1/B-2) applicants to reschedule their appointments one time without incurring any additional fees. Applicants retain the flexibility to choose their preferred appointment location initially, with the option for a single reschedule if needed.
France Student Focus
France is actively cultivating stronger academic ties with India, with ambitious plans to significantly increase the number of Indian students pursuing higher education in the country. Following discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron during Macron’s February 2026 visit, a commitment has been made to enhance student mobility. The French government aims to triple the intake of Indian students to 30,000 by the year 2030. This objective is supported by initiatives focused on simplifying visa application procedures, reducing processing times, and expanding post-study work opportunities for international graduates. Additionally, discussions are underway for a potential visa-free airport transit pilot program, which could greatly simplify flight connections for Indian travelers transiting through French airports.
Sri Lanka Digital Nomad
In February 2026, Sri Lanka officially launched a dedicated digital nomad visa, presenting a new avenue for remote workers, including those from India, to reside on the island for up to a year. This visa is specifically for individuals who earn their income from clients located outside of Sri Lanka. To be eligible, applicants must be at least 18 years old and demonstrate a consistent monthly income of $2,000 (approximately Rs1,82,794). A key stipulation is that employment must be exclusively with overseas companies; working for Sri Lankan businesses is not permitted under this visa. Applications are managed through the Department of Immigration and Emigration website, where comprehensive requirements and submission guidelines are available. The visa is valid for one year, carries a fee of Rs45,326 per person, and offers the possibility of annual renewal.
