An Unexpected Calling
The allure of the Faroe Islands, a remote archipelago in the North Atlantic, was immediate and profound for a seasoned travel writer who had journeyed
through 70 countries. During her initial solo visit, the dramatic scenery—crashing waves against sheer cliffs, numerous waterfalls, and vibrantly colored houses dotting the landscape—captivated her senses. Despite the initial nerves associated with navigating the islands' challenging roads, including tunnels and cliff-hugging routes, and an unexpected encounter with a flock of sheep, the overwhelming sense of peace and tranquility was unlike anything she had experienced before. This overwhelming natural beauty, coupled with surprisingly modern infrastructure and a burgeoning luxury travel scene, set the stage for a life-altering decision.
Finding Home Amidst Nature
The search for a permanent dwelling, a desire born from a nomadic lifestyle of full-time travel, led the author to the Faroe Islands. Within just 48 hours of her first visit, she recognized the profound specialness of the place, urging her partner to experience it. This initial spark ignited a lengthy, four-year pursuit of property ownership, a process complicated by scarce inventory and a strict requirement for government permission for foreign buyers. Her determination to reside in a small village, coupled with a deep affection for the islands, was crucial in her application. Eventually, she secured approval and emerged victorious from a bidding war for a house, marking the beginning of a new chapter in this remote haven.
Renovating a Dream
Following the successful acquisition of her property, the author and her partner embarked on a significant renovation of their traditional Faroese cottage, originally built in 1910 and named Torlabrúgv. This endeavor involved transforming their envisioned getaway into a dream home, which they now share by renting it out when not in residence. The renovation included substantial upgrades such as completely redoing the bathroom, enlarging the bedrooms, and installing a large picture window offering panoramic views of the fjord and surrounding mountains. This project not only enhanced the comfort and aesthetics of their home but also solidified their connection to the islands, allowing them to savor the enduring sense of calm and peace that the Faroese landscape inspires.
