The revival of the Terrano name at Auto China 2026 marks a dramatic departure from its past iterations. This new concept car, showcased at the Beijing
Auto Show, presents an entirely different vision: a robust, angular SUV engineered for challenging terrains and long journeys, all while incorporating advanced plug-in hybrid technology. This initiative is a key component of Nissan's expanded electrification strategy within China, a market increasingly vital for both innovation and global exports. Unlike its predecessor, which was positioned as a more conventional midsize urban SUV, this latest iteration is clearly aimed at a more demanding segment. Nissan has decisively steered the Terrano into genuine off-road territory, possibly employing a body-on-frame construction, a significant shift that reestablishes the badge's connection to Nissan's heritage of capable SUVs and blends everyday usability with true go-anywhere potential.
Adventure-Ready Design
The exterior design of the new Terrano PHEV Concept exudes a commanding presence, especially from the front. It features distinctive rectangular segmented LED headlamps, prominent Nissan lettering across the bonnet, and a robust bumper. The bonnet incorporates a scoop, and fender-mounted auxiliary lights further enhance its rugged aesthetic. Notably, the bumper's shape has been optimized to improve approach and departure angles, underscoring the concept's functional off-road intentions. Moving to the side profile, the adventure-ready theme continues with a roof rack equipped with integrated driving lights and a side ladder for easy roof access. Chunky all-terrain tires and squared wheel arches complement the upright silhouette, evoking a classic SUV appeal. The bodywork appears practical and deliberately designed, aligning with a growing preference for functional SUVs over less capable crossover-style vehicles. The rear of the concept is equally compelling, featuring an exposed spare wheel mounted centrally on a muscular bumper. The clean, four-part LED tail-lamp design adds a modern touch. A substantial beam supports the tailgate-mounted spare wheel, and the overall layout suggests a side-hinged tailgate, though this detail may evolve before production. The rear design emphasizes utility and toughness, offering a refreshingly honest approach focused on both practical use and off-road prowess.
Hybrid Powertrain Promise
Nissan has officially confirmed that the Terrano Concept is equipped with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, though specific performance figures are yet to be released. It is speculated that this system might share components with the Frontier Pro PHEV. If so, one could expect a setup combining a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor, potentially delivering up to 400 horsepower and 800 Nm of torque. This advanced powertrain could also include a substantial 33kWh battery, enabling an impressive electric-only driving range of up to 135 kilometers based on CLTC testing protocols. The production version of the Nissan Terrano is anticipated to launch in China within the next year, with subsequent introductions planned for select international markets. Nissan also intends to introduce three additional new energy vehicles in China during the same timeframe. Developed in collaboration with Dongfeng, this new Terrano appears to embody the attitude, technological sophistication, and capability that the Terrano badge has long deserved, signaling a robust future for the model.
