Hygiene Standards Examined
In a proactive move to safeguard public health, the food safety department of Dibrugarh initiated a rigorous special enforcement drive across various food service
establishments. This comprehensive operation targeted hotels, restaurants, and sweet shops, among others, with the primary objective of meticulously examining their adherence to established hygiene protocols. Teams comprising experienced food safety officials conducted unannounced inspections across different locales within the district. During these surprise visits, critical areas such as kitchens, food storage facilities, and food preparation zones were thoroughly scrutinized to ensure compliance with the stringent norms set forth by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. The inspectors paid close attention to the freshness of ingredients used, the cleanliness of cooking utensils, the personal hygiene practices of food handlers, and the overall sanitation of the premises. This detailed assessment is crucial in identifying any potential lapses that could compromise the safety of the food served to the public.
Sample Collection Underway
During the extensive inspection drive, a substantial total of 50 food samples were procured from various eateries. These samples are categorized into two distinct types: 48 surveillance samples and 2 regulatory samples. The surveillance samples serve a vital purpose in assessing the general quality and safety of food products currently circulating in the local market, providing a broad overview of food standards. In contrast, regulatory samples are collected under more specific circumstances, specifically when there is a palpable suspicion of food adulteration or a clear violation of established safety and quality standards. These regulatory samples carry the potential for significant legal ramifications should they be found non-compliant. All collected samples, regardless of their category, are slated for dispatch to an accredited laboratory for thorough analysis. The outcomes of these laboratory tests will dictate the subsequent actions to be taken, ensuring that any identified issues are addressed promptly and effectively.
Enforcement and Advisories
A senior official from the Dibrugarh food safety department emphasized the continuous nature of their oversight, stating, "We have been conducting regular checks to ensure that the food being served to the public meets the required safety standards. Today’s drive was part of our ongoing efforts to keep a close watch on food quality, especially in eateries that see high footfall." Following the inspections, several food establishments received immediate advisories to rectify deficiencies and improve their premises. Owners were also reminded of the mandatory requirement to prominently display their valid FSSAI licenses. The department reiterated its commitment to enforcement, with the official adding, "Any establishment found to be violating food safety norms will face strict action under the Food Safety and Standards Act. We urge all food business operators to maintain hygiene and cleanliness at all times, not just during inspection drives." The department affirmed that such inspection drives will persist regularly and without prior notification, reinforcing compliance across the district and ensuring consistent adherence to food safety regulations by all food business operators.
