The Packaging Predicament
A significant shift in how cooking oils are packaged might be on the horizon, as the Department of Consumer Affairs actively considers implementing standardized
sizes for edible oil products. This contemplation stems from substantial feedback provided by key industry associations that collectively represent approximately 90% of the nation's edible oil market. The core issue driving this potential change revolves around the proliferation of varied and often non-uniform package quantities currently available to consumers. This wide array of sizes, such as 650 g, 700 g, 810 g, 850 g, and 870 g, has made it increasingly difficult for shoppers to accurately compare prices across different brands and products, leading to potential confusion and hindering informed purchasing decisions. The aim is to bring greater order and transparency to this aspect of the retail landscape, ensuring consumers can make straightforward comparisons.
Industry's Call for Change
Major industry bodies, including the Indian Vegetable Producers Association (IVPA), the Solvent Extractors' Association (SEA), the Soyabean Processors Association of India (SOPA), the Central Organisation for Oil Industry and Trade (COOIT), and the Mustard Oil Producers Association (MOPA), have collectively voiced their concerns regarding the current state of edible oil packaging. During a pivotal meeting chaired by the Secretary of the Department of Consumer Affairs on May 20, 2026, these representatives highlighted the challenges posed by the multitude of package sizes. They emphasized that the current situation, where similar-looking containers hold different quantities of oil, can be misleading. This lack of standardization creates a barrier to transparent price comparisons, making it harder for consumers to identify the best value and potentially impacting fair competition within the market. The industry's proactive engagement underscores a shared desire for a more straightforward and equitable marketplace.
Government's Commitment to Clarity
In response to the industry's concerns and with a steadfast commitment to consumer protection, the Department of Consumer Affairs is diligently examining the feasibility of introducing standard pack sizes for edible oils. This review is being conducted within the framework of the Legal Metrology Act, which governs weights and measures. The Secretary of the department acknowledged that the suggestions put forth by the industry associations are under thorough review. The primary objectives are to enhance market transparency, facilitate easier price comparisons for consumers, and uphold fair trade practices. Importantly, any new regulations would be applied uniformly to both domestically produced and imported edible oils, ensuring a level playing field for all market participants. The government remains dedicated to implementing balanced and practical policy measures that strengthen consumer rights and promote a more transparent marketplace.
