Traditional Tastes, Limited Portions
Actor Saurabh Shukla recently shed light on the distinctive dietary practices of his co-star Akshay Kumar, describing them as refreshingly 'old-fashioned.'
Shukla emphasized that Kumar's approach to food is characterized by moderation and a strong preference for traditional Indian cuisine. Contrary to notions of restrictive dieting, Shukla clarified that Kumar consumes a variety of 'desi khaana' (simple, home-style Indian food) and 'sab kuch khaate hain' (eats everything), implying a diverse but controlled intake. This suggests a philosophy that embraces the richness of local flavors without succumbing to excess. Consultant dietitian Garima Goyal further elaborated on this, labeling it a 'sustainable and practical health behaviour.' She explained that 'limited eating' is not about deprivation but rather about 'mindful eating,' where one consumes precisely the amount of energy the body requires, thus preventing unnecessary fat accumulation and maintaining stable insulin levels, crucial for long-term health and weight management.
The Power of Shared Meals
Beyond the 'what' and 'how much' of his meals, Saurabh Shukla highlighted a significant aspect of Akshay Kumar's dining habits: the communal aspect. Shukla noted that when a spread is prepared, it's often intended for a larger group, around 10-12 people. This is because Kumar enjoys the practice of having everyone sit together at the table to eat. Shukla described this as a 'beautiful and poignant' old-fashioned tradition. Dietitian Garima Goyal corroborated the health benefits of this communal dining practice, explaining its role in preventing overeating. When individuals dine in a group or with family, they tend to eat more slowly. This slower pace allows the brain sufficient time to register feelings of fullness or satiety, thereby reducing the likelihood of consuming excessive amounts of food. Furthermore, eating in good company can enhance emotional satisfaction, which may indirectly help in curbing tendencies towards binge eating or emotional overconsumption, contributing to a healthier relationship with food.
Discipline Over Extremes
Garima Goyal also pointed out the underlying principle behind Akshay Kumar's consistent health and fitness: daily discipline, rather than adherence to extreme diets. She specifically mentioned that his lifestyle does not revolve around fad diets, crash dieting, or an obsessive focus on 'cheat meals.' Instead, it is a matter of consistent, everyday adherence to healthy practices. This unwavering daily routine is instrumental in maintaining a stable metabolism and supporting hormonal balance over an extended period. Goyal further underscored that achieving fitness is not dependent on consuming expensive, exotic foods or relying heavily on supplements. The true foundation of good health lies in cultivating consistent daily habits, such as controlling portion sizes, practicing mindful eating, and sticking to a regular routine. The advice is to keep meals wholesome and light while ensuring the overall diet is rich in essential nutrients, including ample protein and fiber, ultimately aiming to feel energized and vibrant throughout the day.
