Sustainable Living Vision
Leena Dandekar, driven by a profound commitment to environmental stewardship, embarked on a journey to construct Kamal Bungalow, a residence that embodies
her passion for sustainable practices. Relocating to Pune presented an ideal opportunity to manifest her vision of a cleaner, more natural lifestyle. Her core objective was to minimize her ecological footprint and demonstrate that eco-conscious living doesn't necessitate exorbitant costs or increased complexity. The dream was to cultivate her own produce and reside in a dwelling that required minimal artificial cooling while maximizing water conservation, a critical consideration given the home's location in a drought-prone region. This led to the acquisition of an urban plot on the city's periphery, with the initial aspiration of building a 'sustainable' home, even before fully defining what that entailed.
Harnessing Solar Energy
The foundational step in designing Kamal Bungalow involved a meticulous assessment of the site's natural elements: the sun's path, prevailing winds, and monsoon patterns. Recognizing that these fixed conditions dictate smart home orientation, the team strategically positioned the house. For optimal solar energy capture in the Northern Hemisphere, the roof was designed with a southern slope, allowing solar panels to efficiently absorb the sun's rays. This comprehensive system includes advanced inverters and batteries, housed discreetly in the basement, which serve as the primary power source. When solar generation is insufficient, the home seamlessly transitions to grid power, ensuring consistent energy supply.
Climate-Responsive Design
To effectively mitigate Pune's intense summer heat, the bungalow features thoughtfully placed south and west-facing balconies. These architectural elements are strategically designed to shield interior living spaces from the direct, harsh midday sun, allowing sunlight to penetrate only after 4 PM. Conversely, to ensure the home remains warm and inviting during winter days, all bedrooms and the kitchen—areas of peak morning activity—are oriented eastward. This allows them to capture the gentle morning sun, facilitating a natural and rapid warming of these spaces.
Water Conservation Systems
Water management was a paramount concern, addressed even before construction began with the excavation of three borewells. All rainwater runoff from the roof and the entire property was meticulously channeled into these recharge borewells. Furthermore, a sophisticated greywater filtration system was integrated to treat and reuse water generated from sinks and showers. This recycled water is repurposed for flushing toilets and irrigating the lush terrace gardens. The plot's natural steep slope was ingeniously leveraged to facilitate gravity-driven greywater flow through various filtration stages, enhanced by attractive floral plantations within the tanks that add aesthetic beauty to the surroundings.
Green Roofs & Gardens
Kamal Bungalow incorporates green roofs, designed with fruit orchards and trees that thrive in full sun. Crucially, this was achieved without compromising the building's structural integrity or incurring significant additional costs. The existing load-bearing columns were cleverly utilized to support the weight of the plantations. Lawns were kept to a minimum due to their high water consumption, opting instead for drought-resistant varieties to conserve precious resources. This approach ensures abundant greenery and fruit production while adhering to strict water conservation principles.
Eco-Friendly Materials
The selection of construction materials adhered strictly to IGBC standards for green buildings, ensuring environmental responsibility throughout the building process. Additionally, all finishing materials were sourced locally, within a specified radius of 400 kilometers, underscoring a commitment to reducing transportation emissions and supporting regional economies. This thoughtful sourcing strategy minimizes the embodied energy of the home and promotes a circular economy approach.
Refurbished Furnishings
A unique and joyful aspect of Kamal Bungalow is its collection of refurbished and reused loose furniture. Despite initial concerns about style harmonization from pieces spanning different eras, the ensemble has coalesced into a warm and inviting ambiance. This approach not only champions sustainability by giving new life to old items but also imbues the home with a deeply personal character, filled with cherished furniture passed down from loved ones, creating a space that feels both unique and welcoming.
Productive Gardens
The gardens at Kamal Bungalow are a source of immense pride, featuring a productive vegetable patch and a food forest brimming with fruit trees, all thriving in the local climate. The planting of numerous flowering shrubs and trees provides a continuous food source for local bees, supported by dedicated bee boxes. This vibrant ecosystem yields fruits, vegetables, and flowers year-round, with free-range chickens contributing fresh eggs for breakfast and valuable manure for the gardens, creating a truly interdependent and thriving urban oasis.
