Exploring the Bokas
Embark on an adventure to explore the park's remarkable _bokas_. A recommended starting point is Boka Wandomi, west of the main lot. Here, a staircase descends to a secluded beach, leading to a striking natural rock bridge jutting into the sea, best appreciated from an elevated viewpoint on the limestone bluffs. Continue to Boka Tabla, where an overlook provides a prime spot to witness the powerful surf meeting the land. For a unique perspective, descend into an underground cavern at Boka Tabla and observe the waves from below. The journey also includes Boka Kalki, featuring a pleasant beach, and the aptly named Boka Pistol, known for its dramatic blowhole that expels water with explosive force. This sequence offers a comprehensive experience of the park's diverse coastal features.
Turtle Nesting Sanctuary
Established in 1994 primarily to safeguard sea turtle nesting grounds, Shete Boka National Park is a critical haven for these ancient mariners. For countless generations, hawksbill, loggerhead, and green sea turtles have faithfully returned to Curaçao's northern coast to lay their precious eggs. While the magnificent leatherback sea turtle, the largest of its kind, has ceased nesting here, the ongoing presence of the other species underscores the park's vital conservation role. The peak nesting season typically spans from May through December, providing a crucial window for these reptiles to reproduce in the protected environment of the park's beaches. In addition to the turtles, the park is a habitat for a thriving population of large green iguanas, a species that has remarkably adapted to the challenging hot and dry conditions of the region.
Planning Your Visit
Shete Boka National Park welcomes visitors daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the last entry permitted at 3 p.m. Upon arrival, you'll be provided with a park map to guide your exploration, though venturing out independently is also encouraged. The entrance fee is $15 for adults, while children aged 6 to 12 incur a nominal charge of $2. Younger children, aged 5 and under, can enter free of charge. Situated in the northernmost part of Curaçao, the park is conveniently located adjacent to Christoffel Park, the island's largest and most ecologically diverse protected area. It's approximately a 50-minute drive from Willemstad, the vibrant capital city, making it an accessible yet distinct escape into nature's grandeur.
