Revolutionary Sleep Pods
Air New Zealand is set to introduce a groundbreaking concept for economy class travelers, dubbed 'Skynest,' aimed at transforming the experience of ultra-long-haul
flights. This innovative offering will provide passengers with lie-flat sleeping pods, a feature previously exclusive to premium cabins. Initially, these revolutionary pods will be available on the extensive route connecting Auckland and New York, a journey recognized as one of the longest commercial flights globally. The airline has meticulously designed these pods to offer a comfortable resting place for those enduring journeys that can extend up to 17 hours. This initiative underscores a significant effort by Air New Zealand to make extensive travel more bearable, particularly given New Zealand's geographically isolated location.
Skynest Features & Rules
Each aircraft operating this service will house six 'Skynest' pods, arranged in a practical stacked bunk configuration. These individual sleeping spaces are equipped with essential amenities designed to facilitate rest, including comfortable bedding, personal lighting, privacy curtains, and sleep kits. However, the Skynest comes with a set of specific guidelines to ensure a pleasant experience for all users. Notably, eating is prohibited within the pods, and sharing the beds for activities like cuddling is not permitted. Bringing children into the pods is also restricted. Furthermore, due to the confined nature of the space, passengers are advised to refrain from using strong perfumes. The airline acknowledges that snoring may occur and will provide earplugs to mitigate any disturbances, ensuring that while close proximity sleeping is a reality, it doesn't unduly impact other travelers.
Pricing and Availability
The 'Skynest' service is positioned as an optional add-on for passengers who have already secured either an economy or premium economy ticket. The cost for a four-hour slot in these unique sleeping pods is expected to start around NZ$495. Initially, the airline plans to offer a limited capacity per flight, with only two four-hour sessions available for booking on each service. Passengers will be able to reserve a single slot, allowing them to break up their long journey with a dedicated period of rest. Bookings are slated to open in May, with the service anticipated to commence in November, offering a tangible solution for travelers seeking enhanced comfort on exceptionally long flights.
