A Milestone Achieved
A significant engineering feat has been accomplished for Mumbai's ambitious Metro Line 6, connecting Swami Samarth Nagar to Vikhroli. The Metropolitan
Region Development Authority (MMRDA) successfully installed a colossal 42-meter long, 168.96-tonne steel span directly over the busy Western Railway (WR) tracks at Jogeshwari station. This critical operation, conducted during the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, signifies a major step forward, with the project's civil works now standing at an impressive 87.7% completion. The overarching goal is to see a section of this vital east-west corridor operational by early 2027.
Navigating Complexities
The construction process presented unique challenges, especially at Jogeshwari station where the metro line's path necessitates crossing WR tracks. The MMRDA had to meticulously plan and execute the building of pier P124 precisely between the up-through and down-through railway lines. This undertaking required navigating the stringent safety regulations of the railways and adhering to the tight schedules of active train movements. All construction activities were confined to limited nocturnal hours, often with trains operating on adjacent tracks, all under the watchful supervision of railway authorities to ensure absolute safety and minimal disruption.
Precision Engineering in Action
Following the successful construction of the necessary piers, the operation focused on erecting the composite steel span between piers P123 and P124. A ten-hour railway block was meticulously arranged to facilitate this complex maneuver. The 168.96-tonne steel span, suspended at a height of 10 to 12 meters above the tracks, is a sophisticated structure. It comprises an intricate system of multiple main girders, cross girders, and bracing elements designed to form a robust composite steel girder system. The lifting and placement were executed with precision using two hydraulic cranes, one of 500-ton capacity and another of 600-ton capacity, working in tandem. The strategic positioning of these cranes between active railway tracks, despite the site's constraints, underscored the highly technical and precision-driven nature of this crucial phase.
Line 6 Overview
Metro Line 6 itself is a substantial 14.5-kilometer elevated corridor designed to traverse the eastern and western parts of Mumbai. It will feature a total of 13 stations, significantly enhancing connectivity across the city. Notably, this line will run along the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR) and will be integrated with a double-decker flyover. The successful installation of this challenging span marks a pivotal moment, bringing the overall civil construction of this vital public transport link much closer to completion and bringing the anticipated partial opening in 2027 within tangible reach.
