A Farmer's Vision
In the heart of Rajasthan, Shri Kishan Suman, a farmer with a keen entrepreneurial spirit, embarked on a quest to transcend the traditional limitations
of mango cultivation. Having previously experimented with floriculture, creating a unique seven-colored rose plant, Suman turned his attention to mangoes, driven by a desire for innovation. He meticulously collected mango stones from various types, nurturing them with dedication. His persistence paid off when he observed a remarkable tree that flowered three times within a single year, an unprecedented phenomenon in mango farming. This observation became the cornerstone of his groundbreaking work, setting the stage for what would become a national sensation in the fruit industry.
Birth of Sadabahar Mango
Around the year 2000, Shri Kishan Suman successfully cultivated this extraordinary tree into a distinct variety, christened 'Sadabahar,' meaning 'evergreen' or 'ever-blooming.' This new mango is characterized by its dwarf stature, making it easier to manage and harvest. Crucially, it boasts a disease resistance that surpasses many conventional varieties. In terms of taste, texture, and appearance, it closely resembles the prized Alphonso mango, offering a rich, fibrous-free pulp, a pleasing saffron-orange hue, and a satisfying size. Unlike other multi-season varieties, 'Sadabahar' excels in its table quality, making it a superior choice for direct consumption and a significant advancement in fruit genetics.
Recognition and Registration
The unique properties of the 'Sadabahar Mango' did not go unnoticed. Word of Suman's remarkable achievement spread through networks like the Honey Bee Network, eventually reaching the National Innovation Foundation (NIF). Following NIF's guidance, Suman abstained from commercially selling or distributing saplings for eleven years while the foundation conducted extensive nationwide testing. The efficacy of his innovation was confirmed when plants gifted to Kamal Hissaria near Kota began yielding fruits in 2012. This widespread validation culminated in Shri Kishan Suman receiving the prestigious Farm Innovation Award at Rashtrapati Bhavan in March 2017. Furthermore, the 'Sadabahar' variety is now officially recognized and registered under the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Act, cementing its place in agricultural history.
