Heatwave Approaching
Meteorological officials have issued a warning that much of Uttar Pradesh is likely to see maximum temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in the upcoming
week. This anticipated heatwave is attributed to the continuation of dry weather patterns across the state. While temperatures have already seen a substantial increase of 6-8 degrees Celsius over the past three days, they have largely remained below seasonal averages. However, the forecast indicates a gradual escalation, with expected temperature jumps of 4-6 degrees Celsius in many locations. The capital city, Lucknow, is among the areas predicted to experience these elevated temperatures, moving past the 40-degree threshold.
Wind and Weather Patterns
The primary driver behind the anticipated temperature surge is the expected weakening of strong westerly winds. These winds, currently blowing at speeds of 30-40 km/h and occasionally gusting up to 50 km/h, are projected to diminish in intensity after April 12. Crucially, the meteorological department has not identified any active weather systems that are likely to influence Uttar Pradesh in the coming seven days. This absence of disruptive weather phenomena, such as rain clouds or significant atmospheric disturbances, will allow the dry conditions to dominate, paving the way for a steady and concerning rise in mercury levels across the state.
Current Temperature Snapshot
As of Saturday, Lucknow recorded a maximum temperature of 35.3 degrees Celsius, which is notably 1.9 degrees below its usual average for this time of year. The minimum temperature in the city was recorded at 18.4 degrees Celsius, also 2.2 degrees lower than normal. No precipitation was observed in Lucknow. Across the broader state, conditions remained consistently dry, with major cities like Prayagraj, Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Kanpur, and Agra reporting no rainfall. Among the cities that registered the highest temperatures, Prayagraj and Jhansi both hit 37.6 degrees Celsius, followed closely by Varanasi at 37.4 degrees Celsius and Banda at 36.8 degrees Celsius. In contrast, cities in the northern parts of the state, such as Bareilly (33.5°C), Moradabad (33.2°C), and Muzaffarnagar (32.0°C), experienced comparatively milder maximum temperatures.
Outlook for Lucknow
The immediate forecast for Lucknow and its surrounding districts paints a picture of clear skies and brisk winds during daylight hours. Maximum temperatures are expected to hover around 36 degrees Celsius, while nighttime lows are predicted to be around 20 degrees Celsius. While these figures may seem manageable for now, they serve as a prelude to the more intense heat expected in the subsequent days. The prevailing dry spell, coupled with the anticipated shift in wind patterns, strongly suggests that these daytime highs will steadily climb, eventually breaching the 40-degree Celsius mark as predicted by weather authorities.
