A Verdant Discovery
While traversing Assam on a lengthy bus journey, travel influencer Nia Patel, known online as 'patelontheplanet,' was captivated by an unexpected panorama.
Stretching as far as the eye could see, vibrant green tea plantations unfurled under the sun, exuding the fresh aroma of tea leaves. This mesmerising landscape, a 'green heaven,' presented a stark contrast to the typical tourist trails. Patel’s initial glimpse from the bus window transformed into an immersive experience when she later had the opportunity to walk directly amidst the tea bushes, describing it as akin to navigating a beautiful, yet unlosable maze. This encounter with the sheer scale and natural allure of the tea gardens marked the beginning of a profoundly moving exploration.
Faces of Resilience
Following her initial awe, Nia Patel delved deeper into the heart of Assam's tea industry, seeking to connect with the individuals responsible for cultivating these celebrated leaves. She had the privilege of meeting the women who meticulously hand-pluck the tea, an experience she later described as one of the most amazing she'd ever had. Sharing a series of images featuring these remarkable women from the Majuli and Jorhat regions, Patel expressed her deep admiration. She proclaimed it the 'most humbling day of my life,' highlighting the immense strength and dedication of these female tea pickers, who she identified as the true definition of strong women.
The Silent Pillars
Nia Patel unveiled a crucial aspect of Assam's tea production: the significant role played by its women workforce. She shared that Assam is responsible for over half of India's tea output and approximately one-seventh of the global supply. However, the true backbone of this colossal industry, she emphasized, are the women tea pickers. These women constitute the majority of the workforce, enduring physically demanding labor daily, often lifting bags weighing as much as 16 kilograms. Patel poignantly noted the invisible strength these women possess, working tirelessly through heat and endless fields, a resilience that she felt she could not even begin to emulate. Her interactions involved not only observation but also participation, as she was seen plucking leaves alongside them and offering respectful greetings.
Echoes of Appreciation
Patel's candid portrayal of Assam's tea gardens and its people resonated widely across social media. Numerous users expressed their appreciation for her journey into these less-explored facets of India. Many welcomed her to Assam, suggesting that her experience was just a glimpse into the country's vast diversity. Others recommended she explore neighboring states like Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya, further underscoring the richness of the region. The comments reflected a shared sense of pride, with some users stating that 'India itself is tea, it has everything' and that the northeastern regions 'preserve everything,' celebrating the beauty and cultural significance of India.
