Garden's Resounding Success
Asia's largest tulip garden has become a powerful catalyst for tourism recovery in Kashmir, welcoming an impressive 3.5 lakh visitors within just 30 days
of the 2026 spring season. This remarkable influx occurred exactly one year after a severe terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22, 2025, which had drastically curtailed tourist arrivals. The preceding year, 2025, saw a significant dip in overall tourism to Jammu and Kashmir, with the valley receiving 9.16 lakh visitors, a stark contrast to the 26 lakh recorded in 2024. Prior to the 2025 attack, the Tulip Garden had already seen over 8.55 lakh visitors, a record-breaking number. The successful 2026 season, with its substantial footfall, signals a positive shift, with authorities attributing the resurgence to enhanced safety measures and renewed visitor confidence, effectively dispelling negative perceptions about the region's security.
Enhanced Attractions & Safety
To ensure a safe and engaging experience for tourists in 2026, the Tulip Garden showcased a breathtaking display of 18 lakh tulips, representing over 70 distinct varieties, complemented by an additional 100,000 other flowering bulbs like daffodils and hyacinths. Beyond the floral spectacle, the garden introduced novel attractions such as 'selfie points' and cultural zones celebrating local handicrafts, aiming to provide a richer, more immersive experience. A comprehensive publicity campaign was orchestrated by Jammu and Kashmir authorities to invigorate the tourism sector. These initiatives, coupled with robust security protocols, including increased personnel deployment and comprehensive security reviews, were crucial in rebuilding visitor trust. Tourists who visited expressed surprise and delight, finding Kashmir to be a safe and welcoming destination, contradicting earlier apprehensions.
Tourist Testimonials & Confidence
The positive experiences of visitors were echoed in numerous testimonials, highlighting the palpable sense of security and the warmth of local hospitality. One tourist from Nagpur, Rupali Gambhir, shared her sentiment of feeling completely safe, even when out late, and described the garden as "paradise on earth." Similarly, a visitor from Mumbai, Sadiq Mohammed, who had toured Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and intended to visit Pahalgam, affirmed the visible security measures, including the presence of CRPF personnel who also offered guidance. He emphasized that despite potential concerns, his four-day stay had been free of any security worries, leading to a desire to extend his visit and return. These accounts underscore a significant shift in perception, with tourists attesting to the region's safety and their enjoyable experiences.
Economic Impact and Future Hopes
The resounding success of the 2026 Tulip Show is being viewed as a vital step towards revitalizing Kashmir's tourism economy. Stakeholders and the Jammu and Kashmir government are optimistic about the positive momentum generated. During the tulip bloom period, hotel occupancy in the valley reportedly reached an impressive 70%, indicating a substantial boost in economic activity. Although the overall tourist numbers in 2026 might have been lower than the record-breaking figures of the previous year due to global geopolitical tensions affecting international travel, the significant footfall in the Tulip Garden has initiated the tourism season on a high note. Hopes are high that 2026 will ultimately witness a greater number of tourist arrivals, further supported by the introduction of new and unique destinations for visitors to explore.
