Boosting Future Travel
Noida is gearing up for a significant upgrade in its transportation network, anticipating a substantial increase in traffic volume once the Noida International
Airport in Jewar becomes fully operational. To proactively manage this surge and prevent gridlock on the primary Noida-Greater Noida Expressway, the Noida Authority is spearheading the development of a transformative new corridor. This initiative involves expanding the existing Pushta Road along the Yamuna embankment into a formidable 10-lane passage. This expanded road will seamlessly integrate with the under-construction Chilla Elevated Road, creating a vital alternative pathway for vehicles originating from Delhi. The objective is to allow traffic direct access to the Yamuna Expressway and subsequently to the Jewar airport, bypassing the congestion that is expected to plague the current expressway. This forward-thinking approach aims to support the region's growth and ensure a fluid travel experience for both residents and visitors.
The Three-Part Corridor
The comprehensive plan to create this alternative route from Delhi to Jewar Airport is strategically divided into three key components, each designed to work in synergy. Firstly, the Chilla Elevated Road, a significant infrastructure project already in progress, forms the initial leg of the journey. Secondly, a new link road is proposed to connect the Mahamaya Flyover directly to the upgraded Pushta Road. This crucial connection will divert traffic from Delhi onto the new corridor without requiring them to enter the Noida Expressway. Finally, the expansion of Pushta Road itself into a multi-lane highway is the backbone of this alternative route. By combining these elements, the Noida Authority is constructing a robust bypass system, ensuring that the anticipated surge in traffic driven by the new airport does not overwhelm existing infrastructure and offering a more direct and efficient travel experience.
Chilla Elevated Road Details
The Chilla Elevated Road represents a major step towards enhancing connectivity between Delhi and Noida. This substantial project, with an estimated cost exceeding Rs 893 crore, will span a total length of 5.9 kilometers. Its primary function is to create a direct link, connecting the Chilla regulator in Delhi to the Mahamaya flyover in Noida. This elevated stretch is designed to provide a seamless transition for traffic, circumventing ground-level bottlenecks. Significantly, approximately half of the construction work for this vital artery has already been completed. The Chilla Elevated Road is projected to be fully operational by December 2027, serving as a critical piece of the larger traffic management puzzle for the region.
Mahamaya to Pushta Link
Connecting the bustling Mahamaya Flyover to the expanded Pushta Road is a critical proposed link, designed to be a 1.4 km elevated roadway. This new segment, envisioned by the Noida Authority, will guide vehicles traveling from Delhi directly towards the Pushta Road. The strategic placement of this link, extending towards the Okhla Bird Sanctuary metro station area, ensures that traffic can seamlessly transition onto the wider Pushta Road. Crucially, this elevated connection will allow vehicles to bypass the Noida Expressway entirely, offering a significant time-saving advantage and reducing congestion on the existing primary route. This addition is fundamental to creating a truly alternative pathway to the airport.
Expanding Pushta Road
The existing Pushta Road, currently a four-lane, 31.2 km stretch that follows the Yamuna embankment from Sector 94 and heads towards the Yamuna Expressway near Gharbara village, is slated for a massive expansion. The initial plan is to widen it to six lanes, with the foresight to further expand it to a total of 10 lanes in the future to accommodate escalating traffic needs. This formidable corridor will extend its reach to a point near the Yamuna Expressway, conveniently located in front of Gautam Buddha University. The current two-lane configuration on each side offers ample floodplain land for this expansion, contingent on obtaining necessary clearances. This widening is fundamental to creating a high-capacity artery capable of handling the projected increase in vehicles.
Why a New Route?
The decision to construct an alternative corridor stems from a clear vision to proactively manage the inevitable traffic surge expected once the Jewar International Airport commences operations. According to Krishna Karunesh, CEO of Noida Authority, the current Noida-Greater Noida Expressway is the principal artery connecting Noida, Greater Noida, and Jewar. With the airport's opening, this route is anticipated to face immense pressure. The primary motivations behind establishing this new bypass include preventing future traffic bottlenecks on the existing expressway, providing long-distance travelers with a route that bypasses core urban areas, and stimulating new development opportunities along the Yamuna Expressway and near Gautam Buddha University. This strategic move is designed to future-proof the region's infrastructure.
Parallel Elevated Plan
In parallel to the proposal for widening the existing Pushta Road, a separate, more ambitious plan exists for a 31.2 km, six-lane elevated corridor. This project is set to follow the same general alignment along the Yamuna embankment, stretching from the Okhla Barrage near Sector 94 all the way to the Yamuna Expressway. This elevated structure is designed with three strategically placed loops to facilitate connections with various central Noida sectors, ensuring accessibility. A comprehensive feasibility study for this elevated corridor is currently underway, being conducted by the consultant Almondz Global Infra for UPEIDA. This parallel initiative underscores the commitment to creating robust and efficient transportation solutions for the region.
