Increased Demand Drivers
The current geopolitical situation in the Middle East has led to a significant reduction in flight schedules for prominent Gulf-based airlines, including
Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Etihad. This disruption has created a vacuum in air travel capacity, prompting other international carriers to reassess and expand their offerings to India. Passengers who had their original bookings canceled or rerouted are actively searching for direct and alternative flight paths, particularly to and from Asian destinations. This surge in demand for non-stop services is being directly observed by airlines, who are responding by strategically deploying additional aircraft and increasing flight frequencies to cater to this emergent passenger flow. The situation necessitates a nimble approach from airlines, requiring constant evaluation of market needs and operational feasibility.
SWISS Adds Capacity
Responding to the heightened need for alternative travel routes, SWISS, a carrier within the Lufthansa Group, is enhancing its flight services connecting Switzerland and India. From April 1st to May 31st, 2026, the airline will introduce a second daily flight between Delhi and Zurich. This extra service will utilize an Airbus A330 aircraft, offering a total of fourteen weekly connections during this period. SWISS has explicitly stated that this expansion is a direct consequence of many travelers being unable to take their original flights via the Gulf region. The airline is actively monitoring the Middle Eastern situation and remains prepared to adjust its aircraft and capacity deployment based on where demand is most concentrated. Key considerations for these adjustments include operational constraints such as airport slot availability, traffic rights, and fleet management capabilities.
British Airways Expands
British Airways is also augmenting its flight schedule to India to address robust travel demand. The airline will commence a third daily service from Delhi on April 7th, followed by a third daily service from Mumbai starting May 15th. These additions will significantly boost the airline's capacity, resulting in up to 63 weekly flights between India and the UK. This expansion is projected to provide over 1,000 additional seats each week, offering passengers greater flexibility for travel to the UK and for onward connections across the airline’s international network. The airline's chief planning and strategy officer noted that this capacity reallocation is a strategic response to the evolving Middle East situation, reinforcing India's status as a crucial global market for the airline. British Airways is committed to continuously reviewing its network to align with customer travel preferences for the upcoming summer season.
