Platform Fees Increase
The cost of ordering meals via online food delivery services is on the rise. Following a similar adjustment by a major competitor, Swiggy has now elevated
its platform fee. This means consumers will incur a greater expense with each transaction placed through the app. Swiggy's revised fee now stands at Rs 17.58 per order, which includes Goods and Services Tax (GST). This represents a nearly 17% jump from the previous Rs 14.99 charge. The company has communicated to its users that this increase is necessary to support the ongoing operation and upkeep of the Swiggy platform, a message now displayed during the checkout process within the application. This move occurs closely after Zomato implemented its own platform fee adjustment, raising its charges by Rs 2.40 per order. This brought Zomato's pre-GST fee to Rs 14.90, an increase from Rs 12.50. Consequently, when taxes are factored in, both Swiggy and Zomato appear to be levying comparable charges, continuing a well-established pattern of the two rivals synchronizing their pricing strategies.
Reasons Behind the Hikes
These platform fees, though seemingly minor in isolation, are steadily becoming a more significant component of the final food delivery bill. For individuals who frequently use these services, the cumulative effect of these small charges can lead to a substantial increase in their overall spending over time. Companies typically explain these added costs as essential for covering various operational expenses. These include the investment in and maintenance of their technological infrastructure, the upkeep of their digital applications, and the broader costs associated with running their delivery networks. The timing of these fee increments is particularly noteworthy. The food delivery sector is currently experiencing intensified competition. Notably, a ride-hailing startup has recently launched its own food delivery service in one major city. In contrast to the established players like Swiggy and Zomato, this new entrant has stated its intention not to impose any additional platform fees on either customers or restaurants, beyond the standard delivery charge.
Impact on Consumers
For the end consumer, these recent adjustments translate directly into slightly higher expenses for every meal ordered online. While the individual increase on a single order might seem negligible, the cumulative effect of placing multiple orders can lead to a noticeable strain on monthly budgets. As the competitive landscape within the food delivery industry continues to evolve and intensify, it remains to be seen whether these current pricing trends will persist. The entry of new players and the dynamics of market competition may ultimately prompt a reconsideration of these fee structures by the established companies.
