Massive Induction Cookstove Procurement
State-owned Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL) is embarking on a significant procurement drive, planning to acquire an impressive 500,000 induction
cookstoves. This large-scale acquisition is being rolled out in two distinct phases to effectively manage the escalating demand for electric cooking appliances in India. The urgency behind this initiative is amplified by recent geopolitical events in West Asia, which have caused considerable disruptions to both LPG supplies and the country's natural gas infrastructure. EESL's proactive stance is further underscored by its recent awarding of a tender for 100,000 induction cookstoves and its subsequent tender for induction-compatible utensils. These actions were prompted by valuable initial feedback received from various state governments and consumers, indicating a clear market need for these energy-efficient alternatives. Officials have indicated that following the consumption of the current vendor's allocated quantity, EESL intends to initiate another tender for over half a million units, reflecting the overwhelming positive response and demand observed in the current market landscape.
National Electric Cooking Program
The procurement initiative is closely linked to EESL's flagship National Electric Cooking Program (NECP), launched in 2023. This program aims to foster the adoption of electric cooking solutions throughout the nation. The recent surge in the prices of electric induction stoves, a direct consequence of increased demand amidst LPG shortages stemming from disruptions in critical shipping routes like the Strait of Hormuz, has made EESL's intervention even more crucial. By stepping in, EESL is not only addressing the immediate demand but also working to stabilize prices for these essential appliances. The NECP builds upon EESL's extensive experience in managing successful government-sponsored carbon-saving projects, such as UJALA and Gram UJALA. As part of India's broader 'Go-Electric' campaign, the NECP, officially launched on November 2, 2023, is positioned as a strategic, consumer-focused, and economically sensible approach to clean cooking in India. EESL is actively advocating for the NECP to be elevated to a national flagship initiative through a concept note submitted to the government, highlighting its potential to transform cooking practices.
Benefits of Induction Cooking
Induction-based cooking, as promoted by the NECP, offers substantial advantages over traditional LPG usage. It is estimated to reduce cooking costs by a significant margin of 20-30 percent when compared to LPG. Beyond the financial savings, induction cooktops enhance household safety due to their inherent design that reduces the risk of burns and fires. Furthermore, the widespread adoption of electric cooking through this program is projected to lead to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, potentially cutting down emissions by thousands of tonnes annually, contributing positively to environmental sustainability. Each of EESL's energy-efficient cooktops is designed with features like a 1200-W power rating, an energy consumption display for user awareness, and a child lock facility for enhanced safety, especially in households with young children. These modern appliances are not just efficient but also user-friendly and safe, making the transition to electric cooking a practical and beneficial choice for Indian households.
Ensuring Supply and Quality
To guarantee a consistent and uninterrupted supply of induction cookstoves, alongside maintaining stable pricing, EESL has strategically entered into one-year rate contracts with multiple domestic manufacturers. This multi-manufacturer approach ensures a robust supply chain, providing assurance of availability, consistent product quality, and timely delivery of the cookstoves. EESL is already well-prepared for the large-scale deployment of these appliances and is actively engaged in supplying approximately 100,000 induction cookstoves to various state governments, state-owned public sector undertakings (PSUs), and public institutions. The economic benefits are substantial, with induction-based cooking demonstrating an estimated cost saving of up to 35 percent when contrasted with LPG-based cooking methods. This financial advantage, coupled with the environmental and safety benefits, positions induction cookstoves as a compelling and sustainable alternative for Indian kitchens.
