The Injury and Decision
Actress Rakul Preet Singh recently disclosed a significant health setback that has led her to abandon wearing high heels altogether. During the extensive
filming of 'De De Pyaar De 2', she unfortunately sustained a severe spinal injury. This incident occurred when she was halfway through the project, rendering her immobile for a considerable period, specifically 40 days, during which she described feeling like a 'vegetable' and uncertain about her ability to walk or stand again. The recovery process was arduous, taking close to a year to regain full mobility. This profound experience directly influenced her decision to avoid heels, a staple in her wardrobe previously. She expressed that until she feels completely robust, she deems the potential pain and risks associated with wearing heels not worth enduring again, a testament to her new priorities regarding physical well-being over fashion.
Health Risks of Heels
The decision to forgo high heels is underscored by significant medical concerns. Dr. Udit Kapoor, a consultant at Metro Hospital, Faridabad, explains that high heels can lead to uneven weight distribution, escalating the risk of back and orthopedic issues. He emphasizes that they are inherently not ideal for foot health, and especially crucial to avoid when recovering from a spinal injury. Furthermore, Dr. M.S. Somanna, a Senior Consultant in Joint Replacement and Arthroscopic Surgery at Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore, points out that prolonged heel usage forces feet into unnatural positions. This can result in stiffening and weakening of foot muscles, diminishing the natural range of motion and potentially leading to chronic foot ailments over time. The sustained confinement of the foot in such footwear poses a considerable threat to long-term foot health and overall posture.
Foot Care Alternatives
In light of these health concerns, adopting healthier footwear habits is paramount. To effectively care for your feet, prioritize shoes that offer ample cushioning and sufficient toe space; these features help alleviate pressure on the foot's arches. Daily moisturizing is also beneficial, as it keeps the skin supple and less prone to cracking. For nail health, trim your toenails straight across to prevent the development of painful ingrown nails. If your profession demands prolonged standing, incorporating small breaks to move around is vital, as regular movement enhances blood circulation. Maintaining hygiene is equally important; ensure your feet are thoroughly cleaned and dried after bathing to ward off fungal infections. Finally, be mindful of the lifespan of your footwear. Replacing worn-out shoes promptly is essential, as flattened soles lose their supportive capabilities, further compromising foot health.
