Unpleasant Discovery Onboard
During a journey on Indian Railways, a passenger’s meal turned into a nightmare when they allegedly found an insect present in their egg biryani. The alarming
discovery was captured on video, which quickly gained traction on social media platform X. In the viral clip, the visibly upset traveler is heard questioning the catering staff about the quality of the food being served, expressing dismay that such unhygienic conditions could be present in a meal intended for an entire AC coach. The passenger’s strong words highlighted a broader concern about food safety and the reputation of railway catering services. This incident raises serious questions about the standards maintained in food preparation and service for passengers traveling across the country.
Caterer's Response and Public Outcry
The catering staff member, when confronted by the distressed passenger, offered a nonchalant response, stating that the food was sourced externally and that a replacement could be provided without much fuss. This dismissive attitude from the staff member only amplified the passenger's frustration, who questioned the justification for serving food prepared off-site without proper oversight. The incident was subsequently shared on X by the user @ChapraZila, who condemned the 'major negligence' by IRCTC and highlighted the potential health risks passengers face due to such lapses. The post underscored the ongoing issue of compromising passenger well-being for the sake of convenience or cost-saving measures, demanding accountability from the railway authorities.
Railways Takes Swift Action
In response to the viral video and the ensuing public outcry, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) issued a swift statement. They confirmed that punitive action had been taken against the service provider responsible for the substandard meal. Crucially, the kitchen unit implicated in the incident was immediately sealed. This closure was mandated for comprehensive cleaning and stringent pest control measures to be implemented. Furthermore, IRCTC announced that a detailed inquiry into the matter was underway to identify the root cause of the lapse and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence. This decisive action aimed to reassure passengers of the commitment to upholding food safety standards.
Previous Similar Incidents
This disturbing finding is not an isolated event, as a similar incident occurred earlier this month on the Vande Bharat train. A passenger traveling from Ahmedabad to Mumbai was similarly shocked to discover an insect in their onboard meal. The passenger took to X to share their experience, noting that at least two other individuals in the same coach had encountered similar issues, leading to a general halt in meal consumption. Visuals shared online showed a dal-chawal meal box containing what appeared to be a cockroach-like insect. In that instance, IRCTC had imposed a substantial penalty of Rs 10 lakh on the service provider and issued a contract termination notice, along with sealing the kitchen for deep cleaning and pest control.
