Nationwide Paneer Drive
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has initiated a robust, nationwide enforcement operation targeting the production and distribution
of adulterated paneer. This directive has been issued to all state food safety departments, compelling them to significantly escalate their inspection activities. The focus is on scrutinizing the entire supply chain, from the manufacturing facilities to distributors and finally, the retail points. The objective is to rigorously ensure that products falsely presented as genuine paneer, but made with substandard ingredients or non-dairy components, are removed from the market. This concerted effort arises from persistent concerns about the prevalence of fake paneer, often concocted using vegetable oils, starches, and artificial additives instead of pure milk. The regulator aims for sustained and targeted enforcement, particularly within the less regulated, unorganized sector where adherence to standards can be inconsistent, thereby plugging existing loopholes in food safety.
Clearer Labels Ahead
In tandem with the enforcement drive, FSSAI is also revising its labeling guidelines to eliminate any potential consumer confusion regarding non-dairy paneer substitutes. Manufacturers utilizing vegetable oils or other ingredients that are not derived from milk will be prohibited from marketing their products using the term 'paneer'. Instead, these alternative products, which cater to specific dietary needs like veganism or plant-based preferences, must be sold under a distinct classification with accurately descriptive names. This regulatory measure draws a parallel to existing rules in the frozen dessert industry, where only products made with dairy fat can be labeled as 'ice cream,' while those incorporating vegetable oils are designated as 'frozen desserts.' The overarching goal is to foster greater transparency, prevent deceptive marketing practices, and empower consumers with the knowledge to differentiate between authentic dairy paneer and its plant-based counterparts.
Continuous State Monitoring
FSSAI is establishing a framework for ongoing surveillance and progress tracking in collaboration with state governments regarding the enforcement drives. Enhanced reporting mechanisms and compliance checks are being implemented to guarantee that any violations are identified and addressed with promptness. This signifies a transition from intermittent crackdowns to a more structured and perpetual monitoring system, placing increased accountability on the state authorities. The regulator intends to maintain a consistent oversight to ensure the sustained effectiveness of these measures in safeguarding the quality and authenticity of paneer available to consumers across the nation.
Protecting Consumers
Paneer holds significant importance as a primary protein source in Indian households, especially for vegetarians, making food safety in this segment a critical concern. Industry professionals highlight that the predominantly unorganized nature of the paneer market has unfortunately made it susceptible to adulteration and mislabeling. The availability of cheaper, non-dairy imitations sold deceptively as paneer not only misleads consumers but also creates an uneven playing field for legitimate manufacturers adhering to quality standards. Through this intensified enforcement push and the introduction of more stringent labeling requirements, FSSAI is striving to introduce enhanced clarity and discipline into the sector. This ensures that products marketed as paneer conform to the established dairy standards, while alternative food products are presented to the public with complete transparency.
