An Arrival Rooted in Tradition
My arrival at Alila Mayakoba was unlike any other hotel welcome. Instead of the usual cold towels or flower garlands, I was invited to extend my hands
for a soothing massage using Melipona honey, sourced from native stingless bees, and locally harvested clay. This ritual, aimed at guiding guests to a "sacred zero" state according to Mayan beliefs, perfectly encapsulates the resort's core philosophy. Alila hotels, in general, are designed to embed local traditions into their amenities and activities, fostering a profound sense of place and well-being for their visitors. Alila Mayakoba, the first of its kind in Latin America and one of 19 Alila properties globally, opened its doors in February, embodying this commitment to cultural immersion and holistic health. Situated in the expansive Mayakoba community, a mere 40-minute journey from Cancun International Airport, this resort is nestled within a lush 595-acre gated estate. This verdant landscape is adorned with ficus trees, areca palms, and dense mangroves that fringe crystal-clear lagoons, fed by subterranean streams. Although the broader Mayakoba enclave boasts its own plaza featuring a variety of restaurants and boutiques, Alila's dedicated 150 acres provide a rich and engaging experience, ensuring guests can find ample fulfillment without venturing beyond its boundaries.
Rooms with Natural Ambiance
Alila Mayakoba features 182 guest rooms and suites, thoughtfully arranged in low-rise structures that either overlook the beachfront or the tranquil lagoon. Accommodations on the beach side exude a lively, family-friendly energy, while those by the lagoon offer a serene, adults-oriented ambiance. Room sizes vary from a comfortable 538 square feet for standard rooms to an expansive two-story, three-bedroom Alila Beach Front Presidential Suite. Across all room types, the decor maintains a sophisticated, neutral palette of browns, beiges, and taupes. Natural textures and elements like stone side tables, sisal wall hangings, wicker pendant lights, and woven rope chairs add depth and character to each space. This understated, modern design creates a soothing atmosphere, drawing attention to the vibrant tropical scenery visible through the patio or balcony doors. Standard amenities in every room include walk-in showers, a mini-bar, and a coffee station. Select rooms also offer the luxury of outdoor showers and balcony soaking tubs, further enhancing the connection with the natural surroundings.
Culinary Journeys Authentic Flavors
The dining experience at Alila Mayakoba mirrors the resort's commitment to incorporating local ingredients and regional traditions into every aspect of the guest stay. For a delightful beachfront breakfast, Ninguno Taqueria offers both à la carte selections and a buffet of morning favorites. Transitioning to the lagoon side, Na Cocina Local presents an all-day menu of authentic Mexican specialties, prepared in a dynamic open kitchen. Lunch can be enjoyed leisurely by the poolside or at the Alisio Beach Club, where the chicken _tikin xik_, a dish featuring pan-seared chicken with crispy onions, pairs perfectly with a refreshing frozen guava margarita. A particularly memorable dining experience awaits at Casa Amate, the sole remaining establishment from the former Andaz hotel. This unique restaurant is divided into four rooms, each meticulously decorated to reflect the interests of a fictional explorer, complete with vintage photographs, maps, and vibrant artwork. The menu here features inventive dishes such as fried avocado with a blackberry-tequila sauce and a succulent 24-hour-braised shoulder of Mexican lamb. Furthermore, the resort emphasizes sophisticated non-alcoholic beverage options, with a menu of mocktails available across all dining venues and the intimate lobby bar, Xiim. These drinks artfully incorporate a variety of zero-proof liquors, creating complex and refined flavors. For instance, Alila's zero-proof margarita skillfully substitutes tequila with agave water and triple sec with an oleo saccharum, a house-made citrus syrup.
Spa Sanctuary of Well-being
Spa Alila stands as a tranquil two-story sanctuary, housing six treatment suites along the serene lagoon side of the resort. The spa's philosophy is deeply intertwined with Mayan cosmology and the ancient calendar, influencing its range of therapeutic treatments. My personal journey began with a deep tissue massage, preceded by several minutes of guided breathwork designed to harmonize internal energy flow. The result was a profound sense of both revitalization and deep relaxation. Beyond scheduled treatments, guests are encouraged to experience the complimentary hydrotherapy circuit, which requires advance reservation. This circuit includes access to a sauna, steam room, a bracing cold plunge pool, and invigorating sensory showers. Complementing the spa's offerings is the resort's glass-walled fitness center, enveloped by lush palm trees. It is equipped with a comprehensive selection of Technogym strength training and cardio equipment, providing an inspiring environment for workouts. The resort also provides nine accessible guest rooms and suites, spread across both beach and lagoon sides, featuring wider doorways, lowered vanities, and roll-in showers for enhanced comfort and convenience.
